new smoker = too heavy ?

Recommended Posts

I just purchased a Masterbuilt 30" digital electric smokehouse. Its very nice and I like it a lot. the only down side that I've noticed so far is that it is just too heavy... 50+ pounds...much heavier than my gas smoker.

the unit does not have any handles so it is just smooth and very hard to pick up and move around (when you factor in the overall size))

has anyone else purchased this model or one similar and encountered the same issue? and what is a good solution to make it easier to move around? I thought about mounting handles to it but thought that might compromise the insulation in the sides.

there must be a better way??

On a bbq forum called smoking meats, they have pictures on modifications made to smokers. One guy on there bought a stainless steel adjustable rack with wheels and put it on there. Another option is to find an old gas grill and unbolt the grill from the frame, then set the smoker in the middle on the shelf. I've got the 40" on wheels so I don't have to worry about i, but those are the mods that I have seen/heard about

First thing I did after I bought mine was make a dolly for it. Cut two squares of 1/2" OSB I had laying around and glued/screwed them togther. Then bought 4 decent castor wheels and put on. Now I just wheel it out of the garage to where I'm gonna smoke at. Just dont wheel it around with a full drip pan winkgrin

PS: If you dont want it to slide around, just make the square big enough so you can nail down lath just outside where the base "foots" are.

I was just looking at one of these. Other than weight, can anyone speak to the quality of their smoking ability?

I have a 30" and smoked about 24 different things so far and like it a lot, it holds the temp. really well.
