Agronomist_at_IA
Picked up castration rings, cut the tip of a funnel off. Total investment $3. 4 rings per pole allows 25poles to be done.

amateurfishing
that's an old good tip but I prefer the smoothness of electrical tape cause I already have that laying around & the rings can roll back & forth once put on which I don't prefer

castmaster
For anyone having issues with electrical tape gumming up teh cork, I switched to painters blue tape for that very reason. Everyone laughed at me but it has held up every bit as well as the electrical tape and theres no issues when removing it.

Agronomist_at_IA
Those rings do not roll once they are on... They rolled fine for me. Slipped them on and rolled right onto the reel.
Hobey
Put down a layer of masking tape before seating the reel and using electrical tape.
Naturboy
I use friction tape, it doesn't get gooey like electrical tape.
Tom Sawyer
I use friction tape, it doesn't get gooey like electrical tape. I always throw a wrap down of masking tape first, then electrical tape. I guess if your tape is getting "gooey", you might want to consider a new tape job and turning down the heat in the shack. Agronomist_at_IA
The point of using the bands IMO is so that one can change a reel out quick. You can't when you tape it on.

You can't when you tape it on. that's interesting, why would someone want to change the reel out? don't most set up combos specific to action, style, or type of fish like open water? what would be the purpose of changing reels? morepower02
Put down a layer of masking tape before seating the reel and using electrical tape. ^^^^This. No sticky cork and smooth as a babies rear end.
Scott O.
To attach my reels, I use those same kind of plastic o-rings, but I get mine from Cold Snap Outdoors out of Sioux Falls (www.coldsnapoutdoors.com). I use their reel wraps because they are great quality wraps and are easy to change out reels with in a hurry. Plus, when putting them on, the inside of the wrap is actually a little flat and not rounded like regular castration rings, meaning that the reel will stay extra secure, they will not roll off, and they won't damage your rod handle like most tape will. They sell them for $10 a tube, which have enough rings in them for 4 reels. They come in standard green, steel blue, and iceaholic orange, which if you're into asthetics as well as quality, match up very well with most any rod and reel. The rings has far has I can tell are no different when I compared them. Difference is I have enough for $1.39 to do 25 rods. (4 rings per rod) Also I can have spares in my tackel box when done. The castration rings are going nowhere once I put them on the rod. I hate to say it, but cold snap is ridiculous on their price. For a ring they want $0.63 cents, My way a ring is $0.014 cents. I can by 45 rings for what cold snap wants for one. Their is no difference, and if you look I believe the original color was green.............nothing like screwing people and charging ridiculous margins to the unaware. Maybe I should sell a PAC of 100 rod rings on the bay for $10 and make some money lol.

Eric_Kruger
vet wrap.....Just as good as tape, no sticky mess! I have used the tape and the rings, this is what works for me.....And as far as the "cold snap" brand not ruining cork like regular castration bands.... Even one of their demo rods has the indentations from the bands.
aiathompson
The Cold Snap bands are the same as castration bands. The nice thing with the Cold Snap bands is the tube they come with to roll the bands onto the rod. No need to buy a castration tool to stretch those little things out. Two above and two below the stem and the reels are set tight. No more tape falling off or gooey mess changing reels.

Or you can cut the end off a funnel and save yourself money. 99 cent funnel 1.39 for 100 bands= $2.38 and will do 25 rods at 4 bands each.
