JBMasterAngler
The undefeated golden gophers! OK, so it was only against UNLV, but a win is a win. There looks to be some upside on this young team though. Will be interesting to see how they perform on the road next week.
toughguy
They are looking better. Hopefully we'll get to a new years day (or later) bowl game one of these years. As long as they keep improving a little each year it will happen. Defense is looking like it's up to BigTen standards, just need to get that offense up to speed. SkunkedAgain
Well there were defensive issues too. The big touchdown run by their RB in the first quarter...not a Gopher defender within 10 yards the entire way. The 4th down TD pass over Shabazz was dreadful. That QB heaved up a hail-mary throw and we only had one defender nearby and he wasn't even close enough to make the play. Too many 3rd and 4th downs converted early on.I wouldn't say that we're up to Big Ten standards yet, but we are making progress and that makes me happy. Hageman played pretty well and hopefully he becomes a one-man wrecking crew.
ozzie
The D looked poor giving up the big plays and the O other than Nelson's run and the end of the half drive looked poor. I hope they improve alot between now and the end of September for the Big 10 opener!!
zepman
They are still sooo young...especially at QB.Fun game to watch though...
JBMasterAngler
It looked like alot of people were at the game, which typically hasn't been the case for non conference games. Did they cut ticket prices or something?
JBMasterAngler
Gopher domination continues! Excellent win for the gophers last night! It's pretty exciting to see them make some big plays like the punt return TD and the fumble return TD. Still a long road ahead of them, but these young guys are progressing nicely. CaptainMusky
Yeah I think they finally have some big ten type physical characteristics. They have decent running backs and secondary so that should help.
JBMasterAngler
Western Illinois is a game the gophers SHOULD win by at least 3 TD's. Typically this would be a game where the young guys would see some playing time, but since all our starters are the young guys, I hope Kill keeps them in there into the 4th quarter. They need as much experience as possible before the conference schedule starts. Too bad this game won't get them any closer to a top 25 ranking. CaptainMusky
Yeah these teams hurt more than help those type of rankings. I'm just hoping for improvement each week and no injuries. There are some nice pieces there now. Could be a heckuva team in a year or two.
JBMasterAngler
Well, interesting game. Got the 3 score plus win that I predicted, but was anything but one sided. Any word on Nelson's injury? San Jose State could be trouble
Huskie
We were at the Western Illinois game Saturday, saw some bright spots, 2nd QB played well, not much difference from the starter and their special teams play well. Hageman had a decent game, despite being double teamed a lot. What worries me is that our o-line had very little success until the smaller W Ill. linemen got worn down, that won't happen against most big ten def linemen. Also the d-backs struggled against the pass at times. With the quality QB that San Jose State has, that could spell trouble. I'm glad we have them and Iowa home in the next two weeks. I'm thinking we will need a little luck to beat either of them, but 4-0 and then 5-0 would be great. I might be dreaming.
JBMasterAngler
Another good win for the gophers today. Clearly our pass defense needs some help, but were still able to make some big plays when it mattered the most! I like this freshman kid, but for now I hope we don't need his arm to win games. The run game overall was good. The iowa game is very winnable. Would be great to have an undefeated showdown against michigan (who by the way, has looked very vulnerable to inferior competition 2 weeks in a row)! zepman
We need to improve in the pass game or we have no chance against Big 10 competition. Nelson is the better passer but has not shown what he can really do yet...the kid from Lakeville played a very good game today. It would be nice if they could knock off one of the teams they'll see in the next three weeks. A 7 win season would be progress but they'll have to battle their a$$ off to get there.
CaptainMusky
They gave up a ton of passing yards but Fales is one of the best qbs out there. He is rocketing up the qb chart. We definitely need to get the passing game going. But a win is a win and they definitely have the rushing attack back well against inferior opponents. Measuring stick games coming up. swampman
They are improving no doubt and I like the way Kill has done things. With that said the defense still looks pourous at times, I am not sure we will be able to pass when we need to. I see us having a chance with Iowa here and Indiana later in the season beyond that I don't see more than two big ten wins. Hope I am wrong. harvey lee
Love to win againt Iowa but I would guess it will be very tough. Our pass defense is suspect to say the least.
BuckSutherland
Just to remind you guys in case you forgot THE GOPHERS BLOW!! Now that the pansy non conference schedule is all done let the beatings begin. Worst part is we are gonna be on the bottom of the worst big football conference in the country. JBMasterAngler
I don't believe the big ten is the worst conference in the NCAA. I'd rank them ahead of the big 12, ACC, and the american conference (or whatever it's called). Nor do I believe the gophers will finish at the bottom. We'll for sure be ahead of indiana and purdue, and should be ahead of iowa and penn state. And I think this will be the year we finally get an upset win (Michigan or Nebraska perhaps?) mrklean
the start of big ten play is usually the end of the gophers season
Bryce
Trading field goals for touchdowns. Almost seems like the remnants of the coaching staff called the game as if covering the spread equated to a win. What a complete waste of tax payer dollars this program is. Drop down to FBS and join the Dakota schools where a guaranteed doormat spot isn't atomatically assumed.
muskiemanAD
Fire Jerry and his staff.....If he can't be there and doesn't have a staff that wants to win and is happy to be on the field well fire them they are worthless.........If ho dunk Iowa can field a competieve team then we should be able to every 10 years or so. harvey lee
I could not believe the Gophers wasted the last minute and a half at the end of the 2nd quarter, then kick field goals to try and catch up.Wasted football team or at least the coaching.Liedner looked pretty good for the few strats he has had.
