Yes I actually said the same thing above. It doesn't matter who is named coach, they could have easily waited the 2 years to fulfill the contract.

You know darn well there will be some new hot shot coach ready in the wings in 2016 too.

Nope, its all about a certain high school junior and money money money.

Sad

All the local media wonks are saying Flip is the guy I guess. He'll be a good fit. I bet he won't come cheap though...

Who tries to hire a coach and dictates who he hires as assistants? Doh. I'm starting get the feel for TT to take them over the abyss. The whole athletic program is a waste of tax money.

Not exactly a stellar Gopher sports week. Hire a coach but not be able to choose your assistants? If Teague and his Villa 7 know so much about basketball, maybe they should just coach them via committee, forget about hiring anyone and save us all a pile of money. smile

Where's everybody that argued my point about this not being a desired location? That was pretty comical how you all laughed at me when I said Tubby was our best option. We dump him, you guys thought Shaka, Flip, Stevens would come here. "Yeah right" I said. Well it seems to appear that is the case. No quality coach wants this job. We should just hire Winona States coach, that's realistically what we have coming here. Not an established D-1 coach, we could get a marginal one, but we gave up on a better than marginal guy. This program probably won't see another 20 win season for a while. I hope I'm wrong though. Goodbye Tyus, good luck Vaughn, I don't blame you for going elsewhere

Tubby is looking pretty good again. smile

They should have put that 2.5 towards improving their facilities.

Very few coaches can lay claim to an over .500 record in the Big 10. They just always beat each other up. Tubby's stats are pretty darn close to John Beilein's and I bet everyone would take him as a coach right now. smile

Guess I've been relatively neutral about what I thought of Tubby staying or going. I've been watching Gopher hoops since the days before Musselman (Johnny Kundla was my conditioning instructor for crying out loud) so seeing a Gopher's BB coach fired is just another day in the life of Gopher athletics. I never would've dreamed though after winning the game against UCLA that Teague would can him. When he did, it was viewed nationally as a huge blunder. After rumors of having someone to slide in there have proven to be mostly false, what are we left with? Unless Teague suddenly pulls someone out of his hat, he's got a real mess on his hands at least until he proves otherwise. That could be a few more excruciating years. Barf.

Beilein's conference finish in the same 6 years as Tubby: 9th, 7th, 7th, 4th, 1st, 4th (oh by the way his team was ranked #1 at one time and is playing in the final 4). Beilein's average recruiting class blows Tubby out of the water. And I don't have to go back to in game situational coaching...

Teague isn't coming out looking very good on this...he had justification to move on with Tubby, but only if he had someone to excite the fan base with...now all he's doing is getting other coaches contract extensions and raises and if the reports are true and he wouldn't allow Flip to keep Vince Taylor, add Ryan Saunders, Trent Tucker, Jerry Sichting, and/or Quincy Lewis? Sounds like a pretty good staff to me. Moving so quickly on Tubby would be better digested if he had a current big name ready to go. Now it appears he'll be going down the list to assistants and it could be Dan Monson all over again.

Teague/Ellis better pull a rabbit out of their Villa 7 hat or they're Joe Maturi 2.0.

I don't disagree with you Juice, that this isn't an attractive job. An aging home court and no practice facilities are a tough sell in this day in age. The key is to find someone with some forward vision, that can sell what the University and city does offer, raise some funds for a practice facility, and close the gap.

Well comparatively Beilein’s Big 10 record isn’t that much better.  It’s like .506 vs .425 or something like that.

I think people are mistaking my argument.   I don’t disagree that the program should move on if they feel Tubby isn’t the fit for them.  It’s the 2 years early and the 2.5 that really bothered me, especially seeing now that they didn’t have someone waiting in the wings.

And now that they didn’t get their first handful of choices, it will be more of the same mediocrity the U is so famous for, with a year or two a decade that they are above average mixed in.

Exactly what the guy they fired was giving them….and maybe even more

Except that Tubby wasnt giving them ANYTHING above average. Not once! I dont count 9th in the Big Ten as above average with you best team! Serioulsy, I dont care who they get, give someone a shot. Tubby was NOT the guy and we may do better, we may do the same or worse (which will result in another firing), but at least we have to try and do something. Sticking with the same guy and expecting different results is insanity defined.

Saw on the news Tubby to coach Texas Tech.

The sad part in this is that the Tech fans are probably more excited about their "new" coach than the Gopher fans will be about theirs.

I have to just laugh now, when everyone (including myself) was talking about how Norwood Teague didn't need search committee because he had a "plan."

Trust me. Flip would have said yes already. You can cross him off of the list too. Does anyone smell a boondoggle?
I'll just keep patting myself on the back. This whole situation has stunk since the day Teague decided to incur a $5-6 million financial hit without a good plan.

To clarify, good plans work. Bad plans fail.
