Killing record fish

Records are based on weight. Weights are based on verified scales. Verified scales don't generally come with boats or out on the ice.

In order to change all that, there would need to be a fundamental shift in the traditional outlook.

I'm guessing you could have a few retail stores get into a bidding war to buy it from you just to put it on display in one of their stores.

That is also illegal in MN....lol love this state, it really is the state where nothing is legal

I wonder how many times the Musky record has been broken in the past 5 years? Kind of like the Sturgeon record, that thing gets beat a couple times a year or more.

Personally, I would kind of hate to see a record catfish killed, just to be recognized on paper, so I took the initiative to put together a MN Catch and Release record. Are these the 2 biggest cats ever caught and released? Of course not, but you have to start somewhere right? And with good documentation and verification it is entirely possible to pull it off. And now that the bar has been set, it’s going to take solid proof to better these fish. If someone has a bigger fish with pictures clearly showing the length and girth and a few different hold angles, and maybe even a video, by all means please prove me wrong. smile

The biggest problem with this kind of deal is that you will always have “wise guys” that will find a way to take advantage of the system and submit fakes and frauds. They can do this by modding the ruler, editing the pictures, or submitting fish from a different state. It will be my responsibility to try and sniff these out and that might be easier said than done and this idea could possibly go up in flames.

Its worth a try though.

who cares really...if you need the satisfaction of claiming you caught the record then you will more than likely put it on the wall anyways. If you don't really care about the ego stroking you get from being named in the books as the record holder you can do all the weight and measurements and let the fish go knowing that you broke the listed record....either way is fine by me. Keepeing the fish alive to be sold is silly and I think if one profited from a live fish from MN waters then the money gained half should go to the state for stocking or something along those lines...glad we don't have to worry about that can of worms!!

DTro- I checked out your catfish records link and I thought that is very cool that you are taking the time to do a catch and release record. it really shows how much you love your cats and the sport.

In todays day and age with good cameras on most phones and the internet I think this is a great project.

Don't forget you have to drain the water from your boat you would have to bring a tub with an aerator to keep it alive to laugh

Catfish tournies down south do this exact thing, aluminum tub in the truck bed with masssive amounts of aeration to transport 70lb flatheads.

Who cares if MN (hereby referred to as "the man" for kicks and giggles) recognizes your effort. The man just wants to keep you down and make you kill your prize instead of getting the thrill of a successful release.

That doesn't stop you from investing in a quality scale and weighing system. The europeans make great use of slings and other devices for safely weighing and releasing carp, silurian catfish, pike, and more. If I was chasing a record, having a video recording of the length measurement and weight with a fish-safe scale would be all I would need, and no one could tell me that my fish wasn't the biggest ever recorded. Heck it'd probably have just as much if not more legitimacy than "official" records from 70 years ago.

I release everything that I catch, well most fish. I would have to catch a record size fish, then decide what to do. I know if you catch a world record fish, that can net you up to a million dollers, so that fish is not getting released. a state record, well thats not that important, unless your on a small lake and theres a very good chance it gets caught again. I would like to be the person that caught it, not released it, and get no reconition.
