How well did it work a few weeks ago against a mediocre team like the Vikings?

Well in the Vikings case it worked pretty well. The niners are also 6-2, so overall i'd say it's working pretty well. The Vikings have arguably the best RB and WR in football, they've shown this yr as long as Ponder is steady they will more than not be in position to win games.

You can't look at one individual game and make judgements about whether or not that type of QB can win games. Tom Brady, Aaron Rodgers, Peyton Manning, Drew Brees, Matthew Stafford, Eli Manning and RG3 have all lost games to mediocore teams this season. Should we judge them based on that one game or should we look at the bulk of their games over the past season or two? If you do that then a guy like Alex Smith is looking pretty solid consider he's 19-5 in the regular season since last season.

Now you can't really compare Smith to Ponder in terms of wins since Smith has a much better defense, better coaching, and better overall WR's.

Dilfer, Brad Johnson, Grossman... all made it to a Super Bowl, none were great QBs, some would argue they couldn't even manange a game...

I'd say Alex Smith fits somewhere in or slightly above this category. Certainly not a great QB.

Good Luck!

LOL grin

Tom Brady has been in more super bowls himself than all of these guys put together.

I'm not too sure I would lump the Vikings Defense in with any of those other teams.

For the most part those teams won inspite of there terrible QB's. I believe Dilfer went something like a month without his offense scoring a TD. Thats not managing a game, thats just surviving it.

Alex Smith is in my mind much better than all three of those guys. He seems to be doing it in back to back years proving some sort of consistency and he can also look great at times.

I guess the question is whether ponder is going to be a Dilfer, Smith, or Rogers type of QB. Right now its too soon to tell but if I had to guess I'd say he at least has the potential to be an Alex Smith type. Certainly don't see him as a top 5 Qb but we can win with a top 12 QB.

I would anticipate the Vikings have realized this by now...maybe even when they drafted him...IDK.

I hope they follow the SF, Baltimore, and Tampa models of success with a QB like this...HEAVY D!!

Game changing linebackers have been the heart of that model...something we sorely need.

Manti Teo would be a good start.

Those of you who don't see Ponder as the future QB of this team, what is your solution? Draft another guy? If we finish with 7-8 wins this season then we're not going to have a high enough pick to get one of the top guys. That puts us in the middle of the 1st round and reaching for another QB with Ponder's skill set. Do we trade the farm to move up to 1 or 2 and take Matt Barkley? Then we've spent two first rounders in three years on QBs with no guarantee that either of them is good. I know there's no guarantee with any position, but some are much less hit or miss than QB. I don't like what I've seen from Ponder lately, but it's still early and only his second season at the position. I think we should be patient and keep building the team around him.

I agree 110%. We haven't broken in a young QB for many years and our patience is very low. We have already eclipsed our projected win total for the WHOLE YEAR by the midway point. People want to throw all the criticism at Ponder for last week but our O-line was deplorable and we only have one Percy Harvin. How about the defense? I am much more disappointed in getting gashed repeatedly by the 2-4 Bucs than I am by our anemic O (particularly our play-calling). Ponder doesn't even make my top 5 list for what is wrong with this team the past couple weeks...

pikestabber is right, nice blitz pickups against Tampa. There were 4-6 plays where the defender almost intercepted the hand off. That's on Sullivan for not shifting protection. If you're going to let a guy come untouched, it can't be the one blitzing right up the middle.

Can you imagine the heat Ponder would be under right now had the Vikes not won @Wash last year, got the #2 pick (RG3) and traded it to Washington since Ponder was our guy?

Comparing those QB's to a modern day QB is just plain out Tom foolery!!! Grossman maybe, but he sucked plain and simple plus he didnt win the big dance. Brad Johnson still and will have better numbers than Ponder when its all said and done!!!!! Dilfer only started eight games during the Ravens super bowl win. Not bad for a back up that comes in and takes your team to the Super Bowl. That is some really bad comparisons for Ponder how we are seeing really is not that good.

Bowe is over rated but I'd take him, out of the 3 listed I'd rather have Wallace.

Ponder reminds me most of Flacco or Sanchez.

There's a fine line between waiting for your player to pan out and wasting to much time on the player.

To early to say Ponder won't be good but he hasn't shown anything to make people believe he's top 10 qb material.

Chris Chandler also made the big dance, we can't forget that game and how he led the falcons down the field with enough time because Robert Smith ran it out of bounds before the Gary Anderson I now live in hiding kick giving Atlanta the time they needed to crush our sissy secondary. That is why Randy Moss said there will never be a superbowl win in Minnesota, not here man. The dirty birds were soaring, was it Dan Reeves at coach, Jamal Anderson, etc. I'm still jacked about that game, stay in bounds Robert! We blame Gary but dude cmon.
