MN Moose tagged out after a 13 yr wait ! up close wolves also

Recommended Posts

Well, finally after 13 years of applying, my dad and I finally recieved our MN moose tag. We had a very eventful hunt. Opening morning Sept 29th we had 2 bulls grunting back at us from about 200yds away in the timber when we were doing cow & bull calls at first light. One bull was really worked up and starting destroying trees with his rack. This went for about 20 minutes but then they just wandered off, probably with a cow.

We did some more scouting mid day and found a really good area miles away from our first spot and decided to save that for later.

We went back to the same spot we had action in the morning again on opening night. We got setup about 5:00pm and waited to call until a bit later. Well about 5:40pm we heard some branches cracking and we thought it was gonna happen real soon, but what we saw next was not what we expected. A timber wolf jumped out of the brush and crawled up next to us on the slashing pile we were sitting on. It came within 10yds and sat and watched us for almost 5 mins before we had enough and yelled at it to scare it off (we got some awesome pics of the wolf). Needeless to say that spot was ruined for the night, there was a whole pack of wolves runing around us in the slashing....

Sunday morning the 30th Sept we got setup in a new spot that we found the day before. We got in about a hour before legal shooting time and sat and waited. At about 6:40 am we starting cow calling and within 5 mins we had a bull responding and coming in. It took him about 10 mins to get to us. At 80yds I shot him in the chest with a 7mm mag and he just kept walking toward us. I cycled another round in and sent one behind his left shoulder. Again he was still just standing there about 60 yds away now, so I hit him again high in the shoulder and that finished him off. We had a lot of work to get him out but it was all worth it.

The bull measured just under 50"..

(If someone could help me attach pics I will get them up here ASAP.)
