We pretty much only have HyVee here in Sioux Falls, if your looking for good deals on meat, best to keep on looking. Im not saying the meat there is bad, but I have always thought and still do that the meat at HyVee is overpriced.

If you are going to walk into Hy Vee and pick up what you want without giving a thought to cost, then you're in good shape.  If you want to compare some labels and feel like you are making a good economical purchase, good luck.  It's confusing. And I think they make it confusing on purpose.

Here's an example.  Lets say some evening you want grill some steaks.  You go to Hy Vee and walk over to the case and your choice of steak for $6/lb.  Or you can go over to the meat counter and ask an employee to wrap you your same choice of 2 8oz steaks for 8 bucks (or $8/lb).  Its almost like they try to insult you. They do the same thing with pork, chicken and brats etc. You can get brats 5 for $4.00 at the meat counter. Or go to the case and look in the packages, find one with five in it and see if it costs more or less than the ones in the case you might be surprised.

Here is some more examples:

Go to get some chicken breasts (the ones on meat trays for $3.49 a pound as opposed to the exact same ones in the full-service counter for $3.99 a pound),

If you buy steaks, or pork chops, or whatever, by the piece out of the Hy Vee meat counter, there is a good chance you are paying more. Just go and try to check it out sometime.I have also noticed this for other things like cheese etc.

Hey how about gas, foood, booze ect.  LOL  However we don't think about cost's that much when we go hunting.  I do spend a bit for hunting but it's once a year for me [firearms]  and it's worth it.  Those back straps are a treasure.  So are the tenders.  good luck.

Hy Vee is out of their friggin' mind. This Summer...four 85/15 hamburger patties, "ready to grill" (14 oz..not even a lb)...$6. Ya right. Pkg chicken thighs $4.99. You betcha. Pig chops...you don't even wanna know. You're paying for convenience and their advertising; not much else. BUT,the rich folk in CAWchester literally trip over each other trying to grab up their "bargain's". Piffle. I've never seen a bargain in that store yet...maybe because I refuse to go there for an occasional item anymore, that someone else doesn't have. Store #4 in this town just had their grand opening today, and even the sale prices I saw are out of line. I can do far better in quality AND price at my local Mom 'n Pop store or the local Fareway Foods.

We have one Fareway store and its not very convenient for me to get to. But they are currently building a 2nd store that will be easier for me to get to and visit. The couple times I have been there I was impressed with the meat department and looking at their ads they have some great deals.

GREAT meat dept...and prices. Wait t'til their 1 1/2" thick pig chops are on sale. Bought about half of my freezer stock 85/15 burger there this Fall for $3.29 lb. It's GOOD. Rest was fresh grind from my Mom'n Pop this Summer at $2.99 lb.....while Hy Vee was touting their dump-in-a-tube slimeburger for $4.99 lbs.

I can see what you guy's mean.  This weeks ad there they had USDA choice bottom round roasts for 5.99 lb.  that's their sale price!!!  Cubs had them on sale for 3.99 lb. and they are Angus USDA choice.  Then they had another price for bottom round roasts.  Angus Prefered for 3.99 lb.  and that is Select grade fit for grinding only in my opinion.  Same stuff Walmart sells.  This is why I don't want to post their ad's.   I only post decent prices that could save folks some cash and this place is not the place to do it.  good luck.

You are right Boar,  the outdoors are priceless.  I love every moment, every second, and every breath that I'm out there in the woods of the Arrowhead of Minnesota.  If I'm going to have a addiction that would be it [besides smoking, cooking, sausage making and a few other things, but that would be it.  good luck.

as you walk through hy-vee & see the little sale signs on items lift  the sale tag  & look at the regular price. they are the  same..  but we must be stupid enough to fall for it as the  new hy-vee was 23 million I believe & my wife loved it.  plus its a mile from home.

I'll probably get whacked on the noggin for this, but I think Hy Vee IS geared towards the upscale female shopper, I won't give examples why. (I'm not entirely stupid   It sure doesn't appeal to me with it's glitzy, flashy, grab-me-quick-I'm -trending "specials" and it's flashy "special foods" display, ala the "Mediterranean" aisle, "World Foods" aisles, etc., with it's big tanks of swimming trout and lobsters.  I'll take my Mom 'n Pop stores where the flashiest thing in the meat dept are the little plastic price holders stuck in the chunks of meat. I'll take Rob the butcher in the Twins hat and apron any day...along with the realistic prices.
