Horse/Deer Flies

Good luck. Deer flies make it almost impossible to go outside around here in July. If you wrap a roll of flypaper around an old hat the little offenders will stick themselves to it before the get a chance to bite you. Try it and report back.

Ps. I was out in the garden today with the "fly hat" and killed about a dozen of them. It sounds satisfying to hear their last futile buzz.

My neighbor did this. Also, you can use plastic cups above your head on something like a coat hanger. Usually they will buzz the highest point, notice most of the time they are at your head, not too much at your knees.

Here you go! I modified it a little this year and put the frame on a straw hat to keep the buggers from falling on my neck. One walk through the yard tonight got at least 20 of them.

Tucking a couple of Bounce dryer sheets under you hat will make you look rather silly, but it keeps the skeeters away. When the bugs aren't buggin ya, who cares what you look like. I'm not sure but it may work for horse flies also. It's worth giving it a shot.

I read about the bounce sheets too! They work on gnats and mosquito's, haven't tried on deer flies yet.

Hydro,

you should have marketed your idea.

I just saw an advertisement in the outdoor news where they sell a 3" long piece of sticky tape that can be adhered to a hat and it will catch the deer flies. I dont remember what they are asking for price wise...

FYI

Hydro,

Brilliant idea! I admit, I was skeptical that it would work but I went out today and bought some fly strips. When I got home I immediately modified an old hat and went for a stroll through the yard. To my suprise, not one fly managed to escape the hat trap! For the first time in a month, I got back to the house without flailing my arms around like a lunatic trying to evade those little buggers. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Off to enjoy the yard again!....

They always try to bite around the hatband and neck, so I put a white towel over my head, then put my hat on. You still need to wave your hands around your face but it helps. Of course they will still bite thru your cotton shirt, especially if you sweat thru it. The horse and deer flies are horrible right now, I take the dogs to the pond every night, the minute you get out of the truck they're buzzing around. They attack the dogs faces as they bring the dummies back. I'll take ticks any day!!

This has to be about the worst I have ever seen them. Just driving across the hay field last night the deer flies were swarming around the truck. Just insane. Opening and closing the gates were done in record fashion.

These flies are enough to drive a guy nuts. No matter if your going to the garden or mowing the grass can't seem to get away from them

It's definitely a change from city life. Been trying to get my yard/landscaping done, and been having to deal with them day in and day out. It's still better than being in the city!

I use to tie a small Y branch around my hay with the leaves on it, and it kept them away as I was trapping bait in the woods. It kept them out of my face and off the neck as you are turning your head it shoes them away.

Last week on Friday I hit the woods looking for mushrooms and almost went insane from the deer flies. If someone would have seen me swatting around they would have sent me off to the funny farm for sure. My folks had a package of some strips that were about 2"X4" that you stuck to the back of your hat. I went out Saturday and could actually enjoy myself. If was great hearing those things struggling and buzzing for the last time. After a few hours my pack was full of mushrooms so I headed home. The strip peeled off nice and easy and I tossed it. I've got to find out who made them and order some more. Worked like a charm!!

OK, which ones are deer flies and which horse flies? One is big and slow and easy to kill, if you can reach them. The other is smaller, really fast and impossible to slap, and even going 40 in the boat only gets them to hunker down and not blow away.

The latter is what I call a deer fly but I don't know if that is right. They love to bite on the ankles more than around the head. It is getting to the point where I am ready to spray the inside of the boat with tempo, if I thought it would work.
