Good video. A couple years ago I was in the garage doing some last min prep for a tourney that day. Checking a knot on a rattle trap my hand slipped and I buried the hook deep in my palm. I had read about this method and really did not want to go to the ER so I woke my wife and we looked on you tube. It was not this video but same method so we gave it a try. First try I had my wife pull the string and she tugged it but it just burried it further. Again really not wanting go to the hospital I pulled the string fast and hard. The hook popped right out (much to my amazement ). So I can tell you it really works well.

Another method if it is just hooked in the skin is to push it through to expose the barb and cut the barb off and the hook can easily be pulled out. I learned that when I was younger and got a hook in the finger. That was what the dr. Did but numbed it up with novicane.

Pherris is correct. It DOES work if you do it properly.

BUT....and I have to say it again..why not just use barbless hooks? I know....I know...but you will not lose as many fish as you think. Even partially smashing them down will help.

Until you have had a giant treble hook buried in the back of your hand you won't support barbless hooks. But AFTER that happens you will.

Try it. Way easier to get fish off once they are landed and makes it MUCH easier to pick one out of your finger, your partners ear, your dogs face or your kids hand.

I was out on Kodiak a few summers ago, fishing a stream for chum salmon. A group of guys and their ~10-13 year old kid join us at a nice fishing hole.

Somehow the kid ended up with a hook in his thumb.. saw that the guys were trying to cut the hook off with some needlenose pliers! I was glad to bring my knipex along to help them out. Kid kept on fishing, smile on his face when he connected with another fish a few minutes later.

I've removed hooks from fishing buddies with that technique and it works slick.

I tell them I'll pull it on the count of 3 but I don't count and just pull it.

Same with the days and for 45 years. My luck ran out a few years back with a crankbait and a northern. Sooner or later, a hook may get everyone.

i've pulled a couple out by myself when i was alone. once my brother got a treble in the cheek and i had some cutters along so i pinched his cheek and poked the barb through and clipped of the barbed end. this string method looks like a great way to go. i also agree using barbless hooks is a good idea as well [maby the best way to go]. good luck.

My luck ran out a few years back with a crankbait and a northern.

My luck almost ran out on Tuesday due to a northern and crankbait. Had it boatside with the rod in my left hand planning to jerk the crankbait out of the pike's mouth with a pliers, but before I could try the pike made a surge, loaded up the rod tip, and the crank released right back into my left ear before I could blink. I just froze for a few seconds to evaluate what just happened and didn't want to pull on anything, but I still wasn't sure if any of the hooks had penetrated. All I could feel was the crank on the side of my head, unsure of its exact orientation, and wasn't sure how to proceed but then it just fell right out! Lucky. Bled a little but that was about it.

Makes you think about what could have happened if that Flickershad's trajectory was just a few inches the other way. I usually have sunglasses on so with any luck nothing would happen, but you never know.

I've had a few in my fingers and leg and never did that way all three times Dad had to rush me to the ER and the doc did the work Novacane was administered granted I was between the ages of 8-12 when this happened but that looked so much easier.

I also cut a set of trebles from a rap out of my brother but only after alcohol was administered to him and plenty of it.

Approx 6 years ago, I was out trolling for pike and hooked into a good one. I got him in the boat and he was lying in the net. I knew I had to be very careful trying to get the crank out on this bigger pike.

I grabbed a needlenose and with the pike lying on the deck, I held it down with one hand and grabbed the crank with the needle nose. The pike I guess did not care for being touched on the side of the head and also a needlenose by his mouth and he made one big flip.

Well, I jumped back but not fast enough and one treble landed in my thumb well buried.

Now I have a 15# pike and my thumb connect to the pike by a crank bait with it's trebles, nice.

I thought what do I do now so I grabbed a side cutter in the tool tray in the boat and cut the fish from my thumb by cutting off the treble scared to h$ll what was going to happen if that pike flipped again.

Now I have the pike and my hand seperated and sat there and though, now what.

I had never had a hook in my hand or body before and knew I had to push the barb through the meat of my thunb. I just could not get myself to do that as I figured it would hurt to much so, this was dumb, I though I will pull it out backwards, don't try that as it went nowhere and really hurt now and my thumb was throbbing. Now I thought, do I have to go back to shore and go to a hospital to have them remove the hook?

Instead, I grabbed the hook with my fingers and just pushed the barb through, cut the barb off and pulled it back out. It really did not hurt so much as my thumb was throbbing so badly, one could not feel anything.

Then I got my first aid kit out of a storage bin, got a few alchol wipes out, clean the hole and tear up as good as I could, put a bandage on it and returned to trolling.

Needless to say, I am now much more careful with larger pike in the boat with a crankbait hooked to it.

Sweet video....I think that guy is tougher than I am. On a side note, this is a pretty neat trick to have in the toolbox. I've never been hooked, but I am sure I will be.

On a side note: It sounds like most guys get hooked while removing the hook from pike. Instead of using barbless hooks, I think I just may avoid catching pike on treble hooks!

I used this method as well on my younger brother, except I used 20 pound mono instead. I was told that with the mono streaching it's like a rubber band and the hook just pops out. Works awesome.

Had one jerked out of my palm a few weeks ago... didn't use this technique and it took my cousin three pulls with a pliers to get it out... I'm definitely using this next time

This method works well.

A couple years ago I got a #7 shad rap hooked in my thumb good while it was still attached to a flopping 20"+ walleye...it was a bit painful until we got the treble hook cut/detached from the shad rap (hint: always have a side cutter on board!). Anyways, I had recently watch this technique on a video and tied up the line and handed it to a buddy to pull. They were a bit surprised at what I wanted them to do (as was I) but it worked great.

I had a LARGE treble hook removed from my arse as a kid...through my jeans. Just takes a pliers.

Thats not the only one i've removed.

I think i've got a pain tolerance that surpasses most though...10+ bones broken over the years an no Dr. visit for me... I might hurt when i'm old though.

Much like L Harvey, I pushed this one thru, clipped the barb, and backed it out. Also like harvey, it was connected to a rattle trap, that was connected to a thrashing snot rocket. I've never squeezed a fish so hard in my life. I'm pretty sure I killed it, though I didn't mean too. I was just trying to keep my hand from getting ripped up.
