Care for expensive electronics

alumamusky

Question

Just curious now that I own a $2000 fish finder what you guys do to take care of your own electronics?

Leave mounted in boat when on the highways?

Leaving under a hot cover when stored in the yard?

Should I worry about this stuff or just go fishing?? Thanks for any input.

$2000 in electronics starts to make a guy nervous huh!!

Mine stays on when trailering, but comes off when parked - For theft reasons.

I almost put a 6oz weight through mine two weeks ago, shocked Dang scary moment right until the weight hit the boat just inches below the HBird. eekwhistle

The Big "C" store sells a very nice protective case. It is padded and easy to carry. It also has a nice zippered pouch for additional map chips. My HDS is mounted on the boat when I'm fishing only. Any other time it is in the case.

Are you kidding me! A two thousand dollar depth finder! Whats wrong with a lead weight on a length of string?

Mine come off in fall in in HOUSE where they can't freeze. So easy to go on and off no sense leaving them on when parked on lot or street.

It's kindof like comparing a wood stove to a furnace. I could go chop down a tree, and haul it into the house. Or, i could just go push the button and crank up the heat. smile

I always bring a duffel bag with that I keep rain gear and a few other necessities in. I keep my sonar in the duffel bag when I am not on the water. This way I don't have to worry about theft or other potential issues.

Put me in the goes on in the spring off in the fall category. However I do take them off when parked in a public place - either at a dock or in a parking lot.

My dad slips his boat on leech lake and leaves his on 24/7 all year long, as do all the guys at his marina. I'm not that brave.

I take off both 10" screens anytime I am not in the boat. I have a padded duffle bad that they sit in.

One things that I am guessing is that most of you probably are not sure how or if your electronics are insured. My policy states that they are insured when on the boat so I should leave them on but when fishing tournaments that last thing I want is to wake up and find them gone on tournament day.

If you store them in your vehicle, you might want to make sure that your vehicle insurance will cover them, along with your other fishing gear. If you think about it, it dosen't take much to have over $10,000 of personal fishing gear in the truck for a weekend trip and that dosen't include your buddies stuff.

your vehicle's policy won't cover you for any personal property stored in them...it would be covered either through your boat or property policies....and trust me you should endorse your boat policy for fishing equipment cause you would rather file a claim on your boat policy rather than the homeowner's policy as your deductible is more than likely lower and with multiple claims on a home they may cancel your policy making it difficult and expensive to find other insurance.

I have a terrible time finding things on their HSOforum and can not find any cases for the units. I'm really surprised their HSOforum is as bad as it is. Catalogs are great, HSOforum not so much.

I take them off.

Fluctuating temps will make a circuit board expand and contract.

If you can reduce the number of times of cycle of expansion and contraction you'll increase the life of the circuit board.

Electronics getting cooked in the sun isn't a good thing either.

Go to Boating/ Electronics/ Sonar Accessories and you will find the cases that mnfishinguy is talking about.

Mine come off and go inside a bubble shipping bag. With the 597 that I bought I also bought the hard cover for the screen and the protective cover for the boat mount. Last graph lasted 18 years storing it that way. Does not take but a moment for someone to snach your graph at a gas station or landing with the quick releases.
