If you could fish the whole week of MN opener, where would you go?

Recommended Posts

Due to the early ice out and some scheduling issues in February I didn’t get a few ice fishing trips in. I am saddled with the burden of having to use up some vacation days by the end of May. I have been taking 2 days off during the week after the fishing opener and am thinking of taking the whole week off. For the opener, I usually go to a friend’s cabin between Alex and Fergus and fish many different lakes. The 2nd weekend is at another friend’s cabin by Deer River and we fish Winnie and Bowstring. I will keep those traditions but am looking for suggestions on where to fish during the week. Of course if I find a hot bit on the opener, I’ll stay on that and I can always go up to Deer River earlier if the bite is hot up there. What other consistent walleye lakes should be on my list?

one whole week on one body of water during the opener....hmmmm too many people on Mille Lacs for me but the fishing would be great....Red Lake but can't gurantee to be able to fish everyday (wind)... LOW but only catch walleyes perch and Northerns....Leech would win my choice for the fact that I can fish different areas if the wind got bad and at that time of the year Walleyes are fun but so are the sunnies, perch, and the monster crappies....so Leech would be my choice...plus it has so many little lakes near by if the wind was that bad.

Cass Lake. Tremendous 'eye population, access to many other lakes via the Mississippi and Turtle Rivers, bonus jumbo perch, secret panfish spots, and best of all.....not many people. It's a tough lake to fish, due to the mega-structure, but once you figure it out, man o man is it fun!

Cass as well, can't forget last 4th of july and the thousands of walleyes swimming under our pontoon in broad daylight in 5 feet of water. I thought they hated the mid-day sun ? Basically catch as many as you want.

i would go to the lakes i know around the Finland/Isabella area. some nice rustic campgrounds and it's not just walley's. trout also can be had there and all within a very short drive. good luck.

I'd be on Vermilion if I had the full week, but only because my cabin is there. If I could go anywhere for a week for walleyes early in the season, the list becomes short- LOTW, Winni, Leech, Mille Lacs. If it was a little latter in the year I would throw Rainy in there too.

Anyone who can spend a full week fishing anywhere is a lucky guy!
