Steve Foss
Lisa and I were coming back to Ely from rock hunting when we noticed the nearby Pagami Creek wildfire (and the backfire efforts) were producing some nice textures and colors, so we got out the cameras. None of this is HDR.
yakfisher
Those a great shots. How close were you to the burning areas?
Steve Foss
Thanks yak. About 4 miles by my estimation. I told my wife it was more like 10. There are no flames in the closer pics. It's the sun lighting the smoke.
finnbay
Great shots Foss-man! I took a few myself today, but don't know if anything turned out or not.
Deitz Dittrich
sad yet sweet shots!!!
Steve Foss
Here are some from today. Took hundreds of images, since the clouds were billowing and changing from second to second. These are just the ones that struck me on a quick runthrough of the folder. Ken and I teamed up this afternoon. Quite a different bunch of angles and lighting today, as you'll see. Yesterday's work was all with the 5D and 17-40. The two wide shots from today were with that combo, but the tighter shots were with a combo of the 5D, the 1D3, the 70-200 and 400. The old man is my fave.
fishinchicks
The amount of smoke is incredible! I, too, like the old man!
finnbay
Great shots, Steve! I haven't gotten half way through the first card yet, but these are three early ones I like:
Steve Foss
Ah, a little HDR work, I see.
finnbay
Ah, just trying to add a little drama into it - as if the fire needs it!
Brooky
Awesome shots guys. We are getting the smoke here in Thunder Bay from that fire. It's not unusual for us to have smoke days from local fires, but the Ely smoke has a different smell. Just curious. What type of trees are burning down there?? Dbl
Sounds like things are starting to get dicey up there!
Steve Foss
Brooky, it's the usual combo of spruce/pine/fir and maple/birch/aspen.
yakfisher
Wow, looks like the fire is burning really hot. Great work guys.
fishinchicks
I love the contrast of textures in every set of images. A wild fire is something I have never experienced "in person", and quite frankly hope I never have to.

leech~~
Steve, Ken Fantastic shots, they look like Mount St Helens blowing. Beautiful, yet tragic at the same time.
Gunflint Guy
Forgive my ignorance, but what is "rock hunting?" As in "Lisa and I just back to Ely from rock hunting"I hope I am not so naive that it is a euphemism for marital congress...
