Need a new jiggin rod

Recommended Posts

Scheels out fitter guide series, the 75-100$ ones. Use Gloomis blanks, if you plannt on paying 3-500 hundo i would just get one custom made because it would be better than what you could get in the store for that price with nicer components.

Hey SW, I've got the exact rod your looking at. The fenwick Techna is by far the most sensitive rod I've ever had my hands on. I bought mine the first year they came out at the minneapolis sport show, I think I paid about $229 back then during the show special. How much are they now? Polar Bear

Hi Everyone,

I need a new jiggin rod, and I was wondering if anyone could offer me insights on a top-end rod for live-bait rigging and jigging leadheads. I was thinking of a fenwick techna 6'6" with a 1/4-5/8 rating. Any other insights?

Thanks!

which Gapen do you like for walleye fishing?
what length?
Medium action?

Does it matter 1 piece or 2 piece as far as sensitivity is concerned?

How do these rods stack up to the G. Loomis, or the glass rods Back water Eddy likes?

HEH, Gapen, reminds me when I was out crappie fishing and only had one Ugly bug i was all curious about trying, then I lost it in the reeds like a dummy, boo hoo

Get a Cabela's XML in 7' 1/4-5/8 oz. These rods are 64Million Modulas as the Loomis at less than 1/2 the cost for the same modulas graphite composite.

I personally like the 6 - 6'6" med action rods. I also only buy the one piece rods. Gapens warranty is awesome as well - LIFETIME- No questions asked! Man I can't wait to get another one! Try them, I DARE you! You can thank me later! HE HE

Well, Rainman, you've seen me fish before out on O.T., so you know I need all the help I can get, heh!

I use a 6' Berkly Lightning rod, Med. action, right now, are these rods REALLY that much more sensitive and worth it?

HEY, THANKS

I have the Gapens 6'6" medium for jigging and general duty and I love it. Great value.

I lost my 1/4 oz. ugly bug, and will be trying my 3/8 oz. tomorrow. I've had good results with the Flub-Dub and will be buying more sizes of those.

I also used the 6'-0" IM8 Gander house brand (grey) baitcasting rod for jigging ($75.00 to $80.00, I think) and was pretty impressed with that.

Dano they are SOOOO much more sensitive you would not believe it. I am so glad rainman talked me into getting one, they truly are a GREAT rod for the money. I have a loomis also and I like the gapen better. personal preference I guess but I think gapen stands behind their warranty without all the hassle that loomis gives ya now.

For jigging, I prefer a shorter rod with a fast tip. 5'6" is a great length. 6 feet will work well too. 6'6" I find gets a little long though. I seem to have better control of my line with a shorter rod and can keep the jig right in place when vertical jigging. Casting jigs is a whole different story. Longer (7') and lighter (ML) is better in my opinion. Casting distance and hook setting power are key when casting, and I have found a longer rod to work great in both cases.

In case you're interested, my dad is a custom rod builder and can make any of the rods mentioned above. He'll use the exact same blank, personalize it anyway you'd want (particular color wrappings, cork/wood handle, hi-medium end guides, feather in-lay, you're name, whatever) and get it to you for a better price than you'll find in a store.
If interested, e-mail me at: [email protected]

I have a 6'2" Loomis Walleye series rod. Incredibly sensitive to strikes and structure, can feel a minnow kick on the end of a jig casted out as far as you can. I occationaly will throw small floating rapalas with it also, you can feel every move of the lure.

I have a Bass Pro shops pro-qualifier that is 6'6" and it is by far the lightest most sensitive rod I've ever had. It is an 84 million modulous graphite rod with a balancer in the butt section. For $99, it is by far the best rod for the money I have ever owned. The nest model up from that is the Johnny Morris Sig. Series, it has the same blank with better quides and some other things. Check them out, you can fish them for thirty days and return it if you don't like it, you won't be sorry.

This is by far the best set up I have ever fished with. Piont is make sure you are looking at the combo you are putting together. I cant believe I just fished the with out haveing a decent reel on a great rod.
