14+ inch crappie

I caught a 14.25 inch crappie on Saturday. I don't often target panfish, so I don't know how rare this fish is. It was way bigger than any crappie I've caught in the past. How often do fish this size turn up?

thanks,

Jeremy

Congrays! A fish that size is pushing two pounds. Not excedingly rare, but a huge fish in most peoples eyes. I've never caught one that big. Pics?

That is a slab. To add to Greg's list I would say fishing time & how much your targeting for fish of this size. Just always seems that if you target them, in the Metro let's say, you never get them as if you were not targeting them. grin

I fish for crappies alot and there are some bodies of water that you would have a better chance at landing a 14"+ crappie but they are not a very common catch. Congrats as that is a personal best that might be awhile before you eclipse it again!!

The crappie in my display pic is 14" 1/4. I also know there are even bigger ones in that lake because I have seen a 16" get caught. I have also seen a number of pics of other 15" fish from different area lakes. The crappies around here seem to grow fast and get less fishing presure. They also can become very hard to find espically when the lake is just a bowl with a 5 to 6 foot maximum depth. Most of the time fishing is just luck around here.

Anyway, It's Great catch espically for the metro area. Congrats!

I know youre a bass guy so in bass terms Id say you caught a upper 5, pushin 6 pound fish.

Its one to be proud of. Like stated some bodies of water they are much more common than others. If you caught it in the metro its an even bigger accomplishment.

A 14" crappie is always going to be considered a very nice crappie. I would love to mount a few crappies but I want one that is at least 15" and the best I have done so far was 14 5/8" so I released it. The biggest I've ever seen caught in MN was by a friend of mine who caught one that was a little over 16 3/4" and was 2 pounds, 6 ounces. I can't wait to see the mount of it!

Very nice fish and will make a great mount.

My personal best was 10 years ago at a shade over 17 inches on a lake not well known for crappies. I fish this lake every year for a couple weekends targeting crappies and have seen the size decrease because of over fishing and other factors. Last year my biggest was 14 1/8th. I release most of the crappies I catch except for an occasional meal. Not sure what the solution is but I'm sure there are other lakes with the same thing happening.

Yep, it was a metro lake. I had never fished it before, but I think I will be going back soon. Having trouble with the video, but still trying.

ps, this one is still swimming.

Nice fish!

My profile pic is a 14 1/4 caught in one of MN's larger lakes, and is my personal best. Took some measurements and had a wood carver friend of mine carve a replica of it. He died 1.5 wks ago and I'm left with a great memory of him, and my fish.
