Anyone ever find any around the St. Cloud area? I've been searching for years and never found any. I've found them in SW Minnesota many years ago, but never around St. Cloud. I'm begining to think that they just don't grow around here.

I have a hard time finding morels in St. Cloud also. I do have a couple spots that consistently produce, and guess what, both have 5 or 6 elms which have been cut down. It's mainly oaks and cottonwoods along the river, and I just can't ever seem to find em where they "should" be.

I think my spots just north of the cities are just about done. Once they start getting bigger and drying out the end is near! frown Looked pretty hard for this last little pile.

Had a pretty good year and ended up with a few zip locks full in the freezer. Yuum! smilefull-27051-8802-picture176.jpg

I checked three reliable spots in the same timber in Fillmore County yesterday--zilch. The ground seemed damp enough, but I don't know what the crazy changes in temperature have done.

I went trout fishing, and found myself at eye level with one new yellow on top of the stream bank as I was un-hooking a fish. That was all, although I checked around some nice-looking places as I moved upstream.

I'm going to check my spots again tomorrow, and hit one other reliable patch I have not checked; if those don't produce I'm probably done for the year. Good thing I still have morels from 2009 in the freezer.

I hit up my one remaining spot in Fillmore County this morning, and found a meal or two's worth of yellows. They were on the dry side, with some starting to look a little burnt. These came in a little pocket with heavy ground cover on the bottom of an east-facing slope. Elsewhere on the slope, where there is less ground cover, I didn't find anything.

In years past, I've carried grocery bags full of morels out of this spot, with many coming from the more open area that had nothing this morning.

This brings this year's morel season to a close for me--definitely not the best year in SE Iowa or SE Minnesota.

matchset, down about 25mile from you! wink The ones in your second pic are not newly popped. Once the folds start to get really open, holes in the tops, and drying out they have been there a few days. The first pic looks like newly popped one. Have fun! I will be working my way north your way soon! grin

I love shroom pics!!

Keep after em, guys. Our season is long gone down this way - it was short but sweet.

Finished mine off last week in a wild turkey, morel and fresh asparagus stir fry. Big Yum-O!!!

Well, since I was able to upload my pics, here's what I ended up finding in Fillmore County yesterday:

Are the morels past prime in the metro area? Thinking of hitting some areas this weekend...

I would say this maybe one of the last weekends around the metro as they seem to be moving north. Good luck and post pics if you find any. smile

I dont think the metro is done yet I have places in the metro that havent even popped yet. The wind and sun dried the soil out pretty good this week so we needed this rain pretty bad and the soil temp dropped to the lower 40's after last weekend and just reached the lower 50's in the last couple days. I think this rain is just what we needed with the great temps im going to be out this weekend for sure.

If I knew how to predict exactly what morels were going to do I'd be a wealthy man, but this quote above is exactly what me and many other people in southeast Iowa were saying three weeks ago...and that was pretty much the end of our morel season right there. Hopefully things work out better for you guys around the TC than they did for us down here.

Picked a bunch this morning but I left a bunch of old ones too. Found a new spot with lots of big yellows but they were past the point of picking...got it marked for next year grin

Ditto, got out today and found about 100.Most of them were grays,I expect by midweek the yellows will explode.Going out again tomorrow to see if any additional shrooms will pop in the same place. The woods felt nice and humid with the rain we received today.

Went out yesterday in the south metro and found about 5 or 6 pounds in a few hours. It was about a 50/50 mix of grays and yellows, and the ones we found were BIG and FRESH!! The next couple of days are going to be awesome. Now is the time to get out there!! Found them on North, South, East, West facing slopes, and creek bottoms. Everywhere is fair game right now. Good luck.

Very nice. I went out on Saturday after the rain and found no mushrooms at all... Lol... I did find a little isolated rock pile in the middle of the woods that produced a hand full of nice agates though. But they don't taste good and are hard on the teeth... Lol

    • Truly sorry to hear that duffman! I know that feeling.  Keep the good memories
    • Chamois passed away this weekend a couple days short of her 13th bday. What a great dog to hang out with here at home and on distant adventures. Gonna miss ya big time my little big girl.
    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
    • We have bought a new boat, which we will be picking up this spring. It is an Alumacraft Competitor 165 sport with a 90 horse Yamaha motor. I will be buying and installing a trolling motor,  wondering if I can get some recommendations on what pound thrust I will want for this boat?  Also, I will be selling my old boat, is there a good way to determine the value on an older boat ( mid-80's with a 75 horse 2-stroke  Mariner motor)  I will appreciate any help with these questions.
