best coyote/deer caliber

Recommended Posts

ford vs chevy vs dodge discussion coming up!!!!

I like the 308 caliber. There is a wide range of bullet weights available and is redily available at Petry's Bait and gas station in Finlayson (small town gas station that sells ammo) Good deer caliber and for shots of less than 300 yards it works for great on coyotes, but will leave a big exit wound.

25-06 would be a great choice as well.

If it were me, I would go with a 243. you can shoot 65 grain varmint rounds and 90-100 grain rounds for deer.

My dad and brother shoot a 22-250 with 55 gr softpoints. Good for both, tad light for deer but they have had no problems. Not sure how small you want to go, but that, 243 or 25-06 are all nice and all of them will be fine to 300+ on deer, I shot a bear with my 243 and several deer.

will i still be able to reach out and touch something at 250 to 300 yards with the .243 and a 90 grain round

Absolutely. I took a good size Muley with a 243WSSM at 250 yards w/a 95grn Nosler CBST and it went just a few yards...also shot p-dogs out to just over 400 yards with 75grn v-max's. The ballistics between the WSSM and the standard .243 are almost identical. I would favor the .243 over a WSM or WSSM for ammo cost/availability reasons.

I also think the 6mm or .25-06 would be solid choices. Nothing against the .308 at all, as it's history/popularity speaks for itself...I would just give the smaller-faster-less recoil rounds the nod for what you're asking!

25-06 hands down it will out perform any of them mention for what you want. 308 not a yote/deer gun, deer gun yes one of the best.22-250 yote gun thats it period. 243 it works ok on both use to have one set up for coyotes.6mm wasnt impressed with it shot one deer with my grandpas leave this one for the yotes 7mm deer 7mm-08 deer this is the gun iv used deer hunting the last couple year great deer gun. If i could only keep one of my rifles it would be the 25-06 i use 117gr sierra game king for both yotes/deer they dont know what hit them. just my .2 cents

I personally have always used 25-06 for coyotes and I don't think I would even consider a 308 unless you do your own hand loading to get a small grain. I hand load for the 25-06 and love being able to pick and choose instead of buying whatever is on the shelf. As far as deer I can't help you, my area is shotgun only.

Hey Ryan, I have a 25.06. Love the gun for deer and i believe it would perfect for coyote. I shot a 120 grain and it does some damage.

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
