Jim Almquist
While reading this thread I can't help but agree that their meat is over priced for what you get. I have tried them twice and that was enough for me. Really glad I have B&B in Cloquet because I get great steaks for a decent price and they have a great brat selection. My favorite is the Cajun and it is great for a breakfast sausage.
reinhard1
you could even save more money by making what you like yourself. for example i will be making 25 pounds of breakfast sausage soon with ham included in the mix. then venison brats with wild rice and jalapenos mixed in. now i realize not everyone wants to do this or has the money to buy a grinder and a stuffer. but for those that may get interested in this there are plenty of guys on these threads ready to help. when i run out of venison i buy pork butts when on sale and i also buy pork fat to add if i need it. it's amazing how much is charged for fresh and smoked sausage out there. i also understand why it costs so much with overhead and all the rest. so i'm just throwing it out there. good luck. archerystud
I'd like to do more myself but sometimes I get an early season bonus doe and it's too warm to leave it sit around. I don't have a walk in freezer so in some regards I feel I'm stuck taking it in so it doesn't spoil. When I was young we used to do a lot of our own gun season deer. It was nice when Mother Nature gave us the built in freezer and it was good.

Once they start processing deer bring the scraps and tell them what you want.
NoWiser
Another one for making your own sausages. Not only is it a fun time to B.S. about the hunt, but you have complete control of what goes into your meat.Just this past Saturday we cranked out about 600 pounds of snack sticks, two types of german sausage, two types of weiners, brats, bologna, and breakfast sausage. We started at 7:00 a.m. and had everything packaged and sorted by 6:00 at night. I think the total cost came to about $2.50 per pound with the pork, casings, spices, vacuum bags, etc... Everything turned out awesome, too, although it usually takes me a couple weeks after making it to fully appreciate it again.

CJH
Some of the worst New York Strips I have ever bought came from Von Hanson's. The price does not match the quality. Haven't been back in 4 years.
landscaper
in my opinion. If you are ever in Nicollet stop in at Schmidt's Meat Market, you won't be disappointed. Yep Best place to stop!!

Matt C
I always use Geneva Meats. Small town shop, customer service, and excellent all MN grown meats. I cant stand Von Hansens. In a pinch I'll use Hy Vee meat's over all others.
Fish Head
Does anyone know of a great meat store south of the river? Burnsville, Lakeville, etc..
NoWiser
Does anyone know of a great meat store south of the river? Burnsville, Lakeville, etc.. I have yet to be disappointed with Pekarna's Meats in Jordan. Its a bit of a hike to get there, but not too bad. My favorites are their tar-tar, bologna, pickled pork hocks, and pickled headcheese. Makes me drool just thinking about it....

You are making me hungry I love the tar tar too, but most people shy away from that because they are worried about bacteria. I know everyone in that shop and they all are clean and I have no doubt in my mind about eating the raw beef from there! I bring my pheasants to get smoked there as well! tsande00
I've had pretty mixed results with Van Honsons. The customer service is top notch and I've had some T-bones that were better than any other steak I've had. That said I've had some other cuts that were pretty bad and I can understand the negativity towards them.
CigarGuy
The one on the Burnsville/Savage border isn't bad. Very friendly, like the single smoke bacon, some cuts of meat aren't that bad. Any specialty meat shop is going to be more expensive, you have to expect that.

I got some marinated chicken breast from one that was actually cheaper than buying boneless split chicken breasts.

Walleye Guy
I think VH's sticks and jerky are pretty tasty. They are not cheap however. I stay away from their steaks. The steaks at Costco are incredible in my opinion. Their NY Strips and Porterhouses are some of the best I have had. They price is very good as well. JP Z
The VH in Brainerd has been good for us. The steaks are overprice so we don't buy from them unless it's a canoe on a special occasion. Their different marinated chicken breasts are AMAZING. I love their pickled sausage......LOVE IT. I can't say I've made it to many meat markets. But Sam's Club, at least in St. Cloud has Great meat. vikingmeatwad
I stopped in once when I moved to Bloomington and laughed at the prices and left. I don't think I'm their target market though, I am more into value. You have to remember though that places like VH with their great locations is a ton of overhead. We get the German Beer Sausage at Schmidt's in Nicollet too. MuleShack
I have yet to be disappointed with Pekarna's Meats in Jordan. I would have to agree with this!We used to stop at Von Hansons when we lived in Farmington, but it was over priced and nothing was that great.Pekarnas is a home town fav, I like the beef sticks and with cheddar also to munch on. The jalepeno thuringer is also a snacking favorite combined with multiple varieties of cheese. The BBQ ribs are awesome and the jerky is great too. I stopped at Krumarcheks this summer and fell in love with the polish and different varieties of bratwurst including the wild rice ones. The only thing I still use frm VH is their seasoning mix... pureinsanity
To anyone who likes Von Hansons there is a coupon sheet in the southwest saturday paper. Just an FYI
charliepete
Von Hansons has the price of specialty meat store without the superior product. The only thing I buy there are sausage casings.
