Vegas Baby Vegas

zamboni

Question

I am a Vegas first timer, leave in 2 weeks- any suggestions on things to do. So far, my brother and I have a Hoover Dam trip planned one morning, and I want to play in a daily, cheap buy-in Hold 'Em tourney at one of the casinos. I have read online that Liberaces museum is a must see. What else

zamboni, where are you staying? If you're staying on the strip a must see show is KA at the MGM. Just walking up and down the strip and stopping in at some of the hotels is a good time. Valley of Fire State park is unreal and is great to hike around. People watching is incredible and you can see a couple of free outdoor shows like "The Sirens at TI." which is great entertainment or the fountains show at Bellagio. be prepared to spend some serious money on food as nothing is cheap anymore. The Wynn has a great buffet and if you get 25 points on your card it's free.

If you want to get anywhere quickly, STAY OFF THE DUECE. You can walk faster. smile

Don't miss Fremont St. I actually like downtown better than the strip.

Don't take more than you expect to come home with. Money has a way of finding it's way to become a permanent resident there.

I really liked the Poker tounaments at the MGM.

oh and for other things to do. We took a cool combo tour of the hoover dam and the North rim of Grand Canyon. It was an all day trip, but the ride through the joshua tree forest was cool, and the north rim feels less "touristy".

The monorail is also handy for getting up and down the strip quickly. There are limited stops, but you can usually get close to where you need to go. You can get single ride/24 hr/3 day passes if I remember correctly.

Like DTRO said, Fremont Street is interesting. I would go at night. They have some pretty cool light shows on the canopy and there is also a zip line that goes down the street. The Hoover Dam is very interesting also but if you drive there and plan to walk around, it is way easier to park at the visitor center and walk across than to drive across and turn around and drive back. Traffic gets backed up pretty good during the busy times and you really can't see much from a vehicle when your driving across anyway.

Go to Red Rock Canyon and either drive the 13 mile (I think)loop or hike some of the trails. In that same direction you could go to Bonnie Springs ranch- if you get out there towards the right time, you will be able to get close to the wild donkeys coming down to feed. You could take a drive to Mt Charlston and have dinner. We head out to Vegas every year because my wifes family lives there. I do not like spending time on the strip- It's great to go there and see it once, don't get me wrong. I would much rather stay away from the crowds, myself. Have fun!

Check out the gold and silver pawn shop. It's where they film the reality tv show pawn stars on the history channel. I would avoid the older hotels on the strip. If you can immagine the heaviest smokers possible in the same room for 50 years, you get a good idea of what the room quality will be like. I would rather catch some shows, or bring back some cool memorabilia than spend the wad at the tables.

When I was there, I quickly exhausted the allotment that I set aside for gambling. Then I noticed that Friday Night Fights had live boxing at the Orleans. We paid $10 or something to watch live boxing in Vegas, which was pretty cool. There's usually UFC and other types of things too.

I guess that if I was going again, I'd check out the lounge act schedules. There's always a bunch of awesome old acts that have standing gigs in Vegas. Maybe you have a few drinks and listen to Barry Manilow or something!

Fremont Street

Voo Doo lounge (go when there is no cover charge)

Pirate ship battle at TI.

Eiffel tower in Paris

Tigers at the Mirage

Play blackjack at Caesars Palace

Many good roller coaster rides if you like that type of thing.

Eat at Batistas! (Local Italian restaurant off strip a block or two)

Walk thru all the new hotels just to sight see and people watch

The hoover dam is interesting. You can go on the regular tour or the longer one. We went on the short one cause we got screwed up cause of the time change when you get past lake mead. 4 Queens for Prime Rib, get a players card and it is like 8 bucks for dinner, Fremont street is a must at night

It is the truth about the duece, we rode for what seemed like an hour to get to fremont street, but if you got a car it isn't a problem, not sure where to park though. Not sure if the Stripper Mobile is running up and down the strip still. You just have to walk and stop at all the casinos. You can't do everything in a trip. Have fun and hold on to the wallet. Excalibur has free parking on the south end too. Biggest advice is buy the 24hrs pass to buffets that you like and plan on eating there, if you can eat there twice it is worth it. Tropicana was pretty good but kinda limited seating it seemed like.

The Duece is the double decker jobbies. I know for a fact we could have walked faster, it stops every single block to drop off pick up. PITA

The public bus however is a different story. We tried that too, and for some reason between the strip and downtown we had to change busses at the bus station downtown. Now THAT is something I wouldn't recommend. Quite the assortment of characters at about 11pm shocked

Driving isn't that hard. I go to Vegas about once a year. Plan to drive and stay off the Strip. It's faster to go around and take either major city streets to the east or west of the Strip to get anywhere. All casinos on the strip have huge lots and garages accessible from side streets. Same as downtown. If heading downtown park in a surface lot just east of Main Street Station. It's one block north and west of the Experience and easy to get out of and miss chunks of the crowds. I've been to every casino LV metro area(but one), tell me what type of game you're looking for and I can give pointers or directions.

Vegas is a blast! Biggest advice: Have a plan! Plan your "things to do/see in Vegas" before you go! As stated earlier, you can't see it all in one trip so don't try! If you have never been there before there are a couple of good Vegas websites that can help you plan your trip based on what things interest you. There is a lot of fun free stuff to do/see...so take advantage of them. Show tickets: The more popular shows tend to sell out fast/early. So if you want to see a show, check out the ticket availability before hand. Purchase tickets early. My favorite: The water fountain show at the Belagio and its free! We stayed at the LV Hilton last time. Used a cab for transportation to/from the airport and bought a 3 day pass for the Monorail to get around the strip. It worked out pretty well. Have fun!

I know it was in the 40's there for highs recently according to a friend of mine who lives there. I've been there in January where it was pretty cool according to their standards (30's at night).

I was there this past May and while we were there it was in the 60's (record coldest high temp for them one of the days), but it was in the 90's back in MN. I was happy with the 60's, but it was sure funny to see all the people bundled up in their jackets grin
