Best way to stop a moving deer

Recommended Posts

Guess i've never tried to stop them in a run, I just get my cheek against the gun or wait for another deer...I try to make sure my shots are at least 90% kill shots so i'll let a lot of them run away rather than wound a deer with a long running shot attempt.

Might have to bring a whistle this year though.

Lucky enough that most of my kills have been with the deer not moving. Only had one time where I had to stop the deer and did that with a grunt. Stopped him on the spot and made the shot. So for me, the grunt worked the best. Don't know if I would remember to blow a whistle if I had one.....once that adrenaline gets going, things seem to happen fast!

I've always used a nice soft non-threatening baaaaaaaa. It works 90% of the time. However if you have a buck on the move or chasing a doe that might not be enough. A few years back I was literally yelling at this buck to stop but he had his nose to the ground and was moving fast. In hind sight I should have barked or kicked my stand or sounded like danger but I only have a few seconds to think.

My truck always seems to do the trick.

I saw two deer blown to pieces on 371 this morning. I mean, there was NOTHING left except blood and chunks of matter. sick

shooting at them has always worked for me. no lie, i shot at two moving does, and all they did was stop and look around...

I use my voice to make a fairly loud grunt. I never tried to stop one on a dead run or anything, but on a trot or fast walk it has worked for me. Have your gun/bow up and ready to fire, grunt and when they stop let 'er go. They seem to stop for a couple seconds, but are on alert as to what they just heard.

Baa or Blat, something like that, I don't know what it is I do. I've stopped both my big bow bucks the last two years on a fast walk. The first one I guess I had my grunt tube in my mouth because I had time to think of that. Spooked or chased deer I haven't had any luck at, they want to keep going, not sure they even hear you.

My truck stopped one this morning frown But, in a hunting sense I whistle, short loud whistle, thing is like a buck chasing a doe he might not stop on cue as he is thinking like a horny toad, but the doe will and the buck will also, trick is you need to have your gun shouldered so they don't peg your movement, only whistle them if you plan on shooting. Whistled a buck more than 1 time that was chasing a doe and they didn't stop in a clear shot avenue until he noticed the doe was frozen, buck all alone is easy to whistle in your shooting lane, cold lips can make you struggle to whistle and wind can make it tough for them to hear you. My truck is a mess !

If the whistle doesn't work a loud hey like insanity said yes. Depends some on how far away they are etc. too, I'm less than a hundred yards so a short whislte freezes them, but only whistle if you want to shoot as I think once they bolt sometimes they may leave, I don't know but a pheramone or something or they'll likely remember for awhile anyway having a bad experience near your location. Definitely unsure about that but have had a deer get where another deer bolted from, sniffed the ground at that location and went on high high alert.

Last year I was climbing into my stand, adjusting my safety harness, looked out into the cornfield at about 100 yds, and there was a buck looking at me. I think he heard my gun clunking against the tree when I was hauling it up with the rope. I got the gun up and was about to shoulder it, when he had seen/smelt enough and started to trot off. Like a couple of you have said, I gave a pretty loud "hey" and he stopped for another 2 seconds at most. Enough for me to put the sights on his shoulder, and pull the trigger.

Click. It helps if you chamber a slug after climbing the tree though. : )~

You definitely have ,to be ready. That little yell, is only going to buy you 1 or 2 seconds. I have the gun up, ready to shoot. The yell is just to give me a 1 second stationary target to improve my accuracy.

Yes good point analyzer, make sure you at full draw or have the gun shouldered before making your stopping sound. They won't stand very long if they spot your movements trying to draw or lift the gun. A good loud wistle or mouth grunt has worked well for me.

Typically one that is on a full out run isn't going to stop. No grunts yells of "Hey" or Whisles have worked for me. It all depends where you hunt though too of course. But on a walk or trott it will do. I ND I have no problems shooting at a running deer. Typically that is what you get when drive hunting. In MN a little more tricky having to shoot around trees.

The click of the safety should be enough, if that doesnt do it then a short "baaa".

Running deer you might have to be a little more drastic. I stopped the one I shot last year by banging my gun barrel on the side of the stand (by accident trying to switch windows) He stopped broadside at about 20 yards and he was already spooked. Another time I stopped 2 running does by dragging my boot on the floor of a stand.
