I know it seems way to early, but I have a maple in my yard that is starting to turn yellow and orange and some under brush around my house that is now red. I saw a tree on the way to work that was turning also.

I'm getting anxious for fall too. Unfortunately the forecast for next week isn't real conducive for making ice. frown

Won't be long before we're chasing roosters and then getting chased by snow flakes. smile

Yeah I am pumped for winter too. I did pretty decent last year and most of my time on lakes in the summer is research for the winter marking waypoints, finding weedlines and transitions. Each year it gets a little easier to go out and find fish quickly. Winter is so awesome. No bugs no sunburn no heat so sweet!

LOL yes, I am.

Im not sure what it is exactly about ice fishing that I like so much but it just seems so much better than open water. Most of the time I seem to catch more during the winter than summer so that has to be a part of it too.

Leaves turning brown in July in August, for whatever the reason, is never a good sign. Droughts, dying tree(s), or ridiculously early falls are not good things to see in my book.

That being said, I can't wait for winter, too! And sunburn can be an issue in winter, too, along with windburn and a chapped face.

My white birch starting dropping leaves a week ago....squirrels are already carrying walnuts from somewhere....I saw a small flock of geese overhead the other night...and I hadn't even opened a beer yet!

The leaves on the black walnut tree's are turning yellow on the hillside across from the house. I noticed tonite when I was hanging tree stands and not just one but most of them, all the wild parsnips is dead that I have seen the past week or so some of the prairie grass is turning red. anothere week and a half or so and the soybeand will start turning. I love it!!

Im ready for hard water as well. Just booked our annual LOW trip. Must be more people with ice on the brain because they said we got the last cabin available for that week. Its also a sign people are thinking ice fishing because for the last 2 weeks I checked, there have been more people viewing the ice fishing forum than open water:)

I can't wait either. That picture was a bit more than I could take right now. The only leeves dropping here in NW Iowa are my crab apple trees. The maples, and walnuts are still looking as usual. The locust have been active for about 3 weeks now. I can't wait to ditch the mosquitoes and sunburns. The reason ice fishing is better is you can have the grill running next to the ice house with a bunch of brats on it. I have never tried that in the boat. To busy swating and trying to keep the boat on the honey hole. Also the colder weather tends to thin out the crowd. Bring on the cold, but less snow this year please.

    • Sorry to hear that Duff. Will give my GSP's an extra scratch behind the ear for you guys today
    • Aw, man, sorry to hear that.  Shed some tears and remember her well.  They all take a piece of our hearts with them; some more than others.
    • yes sorry for your loss..  our dogs are always special...
    • Truly sorry to hear that duffman! I know that feeling.  Keep the good memories
    • Chamois passed away this weekend a couple days short of her 13th bday. What a great dog to hang out with here at home and on distant adventures. Gonna miss ya big time my little big girl.
    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
