PowerPro

Sorry if this has already been posted before, but I'm too lazy to search for it. Anyway, I've always been a fluoro guy, but decided to try out some PowerPro at the SportsShow for one of my new casting setups. I recently read an article talking about how PowerPro isn't a great line for jigs and soft plastics. This rod is a medium/fast and I thought I'd be using it for a lot of small jerk baits and jigs. Would love the opinion of the experts while I still have the ability to return the line. Haven't spooled it up yet. Would love to hear some pro/cons on PowerPro. Another option is to spool up a different rod (heavy/fast) with PP and use fluoro on this rod. Thanks for the help.

its all a personal pref thing. Some love it some dont. I think its a fine line for jigs and soft plastics, and I think the rod you are going to use it on is grand.

PP advantages= Thin for its diam. Casts well. Stays round. very sensitive. no memory.

pp disadvantages= visible. knot strength.

I really like braid for fishing thick-hooked jigs and fishing slop, but not much else.

I did have it on a couple spinning rods last year and experimented with floro leaders off the end. I had mixed results at best. One, I didn't find the combo very shock resistant and found that I could bust uni-to-uni or a properly tied albright knot on the hookset. So, I kind of gave up on the leader idea unless I was going to fish with a tight line (i.e. vertical jigging, dragging). I did find that I could work a 1/16th oz. exposed hook jig through some fairly heavy weed - I like that. So, I'll keep one spinning rod rigged with 10/2 PP.

DD,

You mentioned "knot strength" as a disadvantage, why?? I've yet after 3plus years had any problems with knot strength when using power pro.

as stated, its slick and unless you tie a very good knot it can slip or cut its self. Most people do not have this problem as they are using much higher strength lines. I usually use 30 on spinning gear. But if you check it on a scale, you will RARELY get it to full strength of its listed strength and you will always break at the knot, not the main line. However, if your using 30lb it will still be stronger than your normal mono.

i used to play poker on wed. nights before the tourn. started when i fished the everstarts with a guy named david dudley and all he uses is superline even on his cranks! he says that he feels 10 times the bites that he does with anything else. Me i like it in any water 3ft vis. and less or slop and milfoil otherwise i like flourocarbon! my 2 cents

Cripes - I have braid on all but one of my combo's. I won't go back to mono ever and floro is too stiff for spinning.

Sufix Elite Braid is what I roll with. I did spool up some 14lb test Sufix Fusion (their new braid) but haven't made a cast yet.

I'll use floro on my crankbait rod, but that's about it. And I too don't like tieing a floro leader as I've have a few of the uni's come loose on the hook set.

I'm no pro, so I use what I feel comfortable with and from what I've learned off of experience

Hiya -

Ray's post describes my opinion almost to a "T." I do like braid for jerkbaits like Pointers and Wild Shiners (which I fish on spinning gear with a ML-F rod and 10# braid) and for small topwaters like poppers, but beyond that, unless I'm pitching in the crud it's mono or fluoro for me. I very occasionally crank with braid when there's really thick coontail in August and September I guess, but I could live with out it.

As for Power Pro in particular - I know a lot of guys love it. I loathe the stuff. There are other braids I much prefer. To each their own smile

Cheers,

Rob Kimm

I actually had a 2 hr lunch w/ Dudley and he's not using braid anymore, he said he uses Trilene flouro for everything.

I love power pro, and most braids in fact. In fact the only braid I've had issues with is fireline, because I've had it cut straight through fluoro when I've tied fluoro leader directly to it and tightened the knot.

I don't have a single rod spooled with anything other than braided line, except my fly rod (lol). If line visibility or abrasion is ever an issue, I just tie a uni to uni to add 8 inches or so of fluorocarbon leader.

I use powerpro on some set-ups but I like it but I like Sufix better. I actually tie a single Uni-knot with my braid and have not had one knot failure in over a year 1/2. I know people always say to use a palomor knot but I just really like the Uni knot.

For the guys that use the back to back Uni with a leader that are having breakages on the leader, whats happing, is the braid cutting the fluro or is the fluro end of the Uni failing? Just wondering because I have had really good luck with that knot. I going to try a large arbor spinning reel this year with Seaguar Inviz X fluro, what a good knot for fluro?

Both the braid and the floro have given up on me. However, it usually happens with a fish that jumps by the boat and turns to an immediate nose dive. It's probably just some of my habits developed by fishing mono over the years. But, I've busted those two knots on hooksets as well. It's spooked me enough to limit my use of that combination.

My 2cents. The last 2 winters I have talked myself into spooling a bunch of rods with floro instead of braid........ That lasts about 1 week then I go back to braid. Just easy to handle, great feel. and depending what baits you are fishing I don't think the fish pay a ton of attention. If I am fishing a jig in CLEAR water will go with a floro leader but a swimjig or spinnerbait I don't bother. Again just my opinion. P.S. that rod sounds good you can get away with a lighter action with braid.

On a moving bait I don't think line visibility is much of a concern, because you are looking for a reaction bite, they fish doesnt have time to study its meal like a jig or worm. That being said I wouldn't want to go overboard and throw my spinnerbaits and cranks on 65lb braid
