What does everyone use for fishing line for gills, and eyes ?(on seperate reels) I also was thinking about swiching to fluorocarbon line. What is fluorocarbon all about?

4lb trilene xl here, on ultra light gear. I'v tried florocarbon, but when you need to go to the slip bobber florocarbon line sinks, which makes it hard to let any slack into the line. buy some florocarbon and only use it as a leader(snell), like the last two feet. this setup works great for me, but i also know people that go as low as 2lb line for the ease of casting little jigs. as far as eyes i go up to 8lb and i rig three diffrent rods one fir jiggin, 8lb xl. one for riggin, 8lb florocarbon. and one for slippin, 8lb xl. all on medium spinning. then i have two trolling rigs one 8 foot fiberglass rod with a linecounter reel with 10lb xl. the other a 7 foot graphite rod with a bass style bait caster, i run 12lb xl on this one. with this setup i have just about every situation covered. i hope this helps a litte, good luck this year.

Yo-Zuri Hybrid. 4lb for panfish 6lb for eyes. (4lb breaks at 8.2lb and 6lb breaks at 12.3) can't be beat on abrasion resistance, low memory, knot strength, and longevity.

Only line I use is Yo-Zuri. except for jigging at times use spiderwire. 2-10 or for trolling/bottom bouncers use fireline.

This season I put crystal on my panfish reel and so far I really like it. I have always used trilene xl but am tired of having to respool every other week due to the memory. I hope this crystal works. I bought some power pro for my other panfish reel and hope that works to help a back lash issue I have with one of my spinning reels.

4 or 6 lb gamma copoly for me.. really I think going less than 6 lb is kind of overkill, I like to have the extra strength for when bass and pike decide they want a snack.. .Florocarbon is really just more invisible underwater as it has a very similar reflective index to water. it is stiffer however and not as easy to manage on the spool.

After a very successful trial of the Gamma ice line, I switched over to Gamma for my open water line as well. How long will this stuff last on a spool? Will I need to replace it every 6 months like trilene?

I am also a huge fan of this line. I use the 6 # on all my spinning rigs, and use the 12lb on my baitcasters.

It is a great line, a little bit stiffer than Trilene XL but much tougher and has the low vis advantages of pure flourocarbon.

The thing to remember with this line is that it is a little thicker for the lb test, so the 6 # is probably closer to 7-8 in terms of thickness.

for walleyes I use berkley vanish fluorocarbon 4 or 6 lbs on my homemade lindy rig leaders(Most my leaders are with 6lb but when the walleye's get finicky I try the 4 lb test). My spools are all equiped with 8-10 lbs basic original stren and never had a problem pulling fish from weeds or battling 10lb pike.

I use Spiderwire Stealth on all my summer rigs. The 2-10 works great for panfish and the extra strength is there is you get something larger or get tangled in the brush. I use the 6-20 on my other rigs. When fishing for walleyes, I tie on 6lb Vanish as a leader.

Only problem I have is late in the year(Oct and Nov), when the braided line brings back so much water and ices up the guides on my poles. I have a couple spare spools with 6lb Fireline Crystal for late season walleyes

Stren... Then there's always Stren, too. smile

Love the Magnathin 4lb for gills, 6lb for early season jiggin' eyes, and 8lb for later season long-lining with Lindy rigs for eyes. Far less memory than Trilene, IMO, which makes it nice off the get-go to reduce the amount of spool jumping your line might do, and the strength and abrasion resistance are fantastic.

Is something like a power pro braided going to be way to visible for eyes? I use it alot when fishing pans and largemouth and it works great, you cant break the stuff. Havent tried it on eyes though.

I wouldn't recommend it--walleyes can definitely be wary. Spring of the year when they are on a hot shiner and jig bite, maybe not such a big deal, but as a rule, I try to go as light and as invisible as I can for walleyes. Another exception might be your PP braid on the main line and a fluorocarbon leader when Lindy rigging.

Like PS said, it can have an affect. Last year my dad was running fireline crystal 8lb, I was running trilene XL 6 lb and was catching fish about 4-1. I tied on a couple feet of XL and he was back in the game. Granted this is only one instance, but it did seem to help.

The Sufix performance fused metered line looks really interesting for trolling for walleyes,

The exclusive 5-color sequence is incremented in 25' segments allowing the angler to consistently position their lures to a specific target depth and strike zone. When comparing the pound test of monofilament line to the micro diameter of Performance Fuse anglers can increase their dive depth by an additional 25% with equal amounts of line out.

Great for visibillity though I think a good floracarbin leader will be best to use with it.
