MARINERMAGNUM
Well Harvey,I said you could come down here to Iowegian land and shoot these buggers and this guy has your name on him. While on a photowalk,we kicked him out of a stand of our cedars-he's been there a long time. Someone may have a guess at his score, but he's a shooter for sure. Sorry the pics aren't better-he was a long ways off when he stopped and looked back.
Stratosman
NIce, if I look real close and long enough I swear I see my name on him.... He looks like an 8.... nice deer that's for sure.

harvey lee
I would guess a 5X5 and 170. Looking at the deer from the rear, it looks like 4 on the left and then the brow for a 5X5. Hard to tell on the mass. The body on that bruiser is massive also.I would love to shot him but I believe the non res license is about $500.00.Get me the license down to around $250.00 and I could be there.Thank you for the offer as that is very generous of you. vister
nice deer. its not one i'd pay 660 bucks for the non resident license though!! If i was traveling out of state to go whitetail hunting, the ONLY place i would be going is canada.though i'm not a huge fan of the ripley hunt, never been there, prolly never will go, look at that buck that came out of there this year. look at the the other bucks that have been shot across MN this year, also the dakotas and wisconny. i dont believe iowa is a better state to hunt. there is way fewer hunters than MN, so more deer slip through the cracks. is there more bigger deer in iowa than MN? no. is there more bigger deer per hunter in iowa? yes. Svinekotelett
I agree with that. Iowegians and illinoits are always talking bout them huge bucks, Like theres none up here.

Kyle
thats because there are more trophies running around, but I think the debate is in the size of the animal. There are alot of big bucks in both states, and may be more numbers of big ones in Iowa, but that doesnt mean they have any bigger deer than we do here...I think that is what the previous person is saying. Maybe I'm wrong. I guess I've never been through Iowa so i personally dont know.
harvey lee
One year a few years back I was bird hunting in middle to late November and in one day, I saw more trophy bucks than I had seen in the last 10 years combined in MInnesota.Once I did see that many in North dakota but that weekend in Iowa was awesome to say the least. MARINERMAGNUM
Harvey, that makes me laugh-the bird hunting comment. Alot of the old timers down here used to load their bird guns: 4shot,4shot,Brenneke,4shot......lol.

walterman
Hands down MN is 10x behind of what Iowa has for large deer. It all boils down to education and genetics. Iowa has amazing genetics and those who hunt down there know that there are big ones running around, so why shoot a small one.
james_walleye
I've been told MN deer genetics arent behind IA, its getting the deer to an age where they show their potential that MN is lacking.
Arctic
Bingo! We have a winner! If you kill most of your bucks when they are only 1 1/2 or 2 1/2 years old, it's no surprise that few live to grow to their full potential. That is a serious problem, especially in heavily hunted, easily accessed parts of the state. SE Minnesota in particular could grow some truly massive beasts, if they were allowed to live for a few more years.A lot of guys will shoot anything that has "antlers" just to say they got their buck. If you have the choice of a doe or small buck, take the doe! Beyond that, you either have to change the culture of hunters or impose minimum antler size restrictions. Many folks would be opposed to that, so I think most Minnesota hunters will continue to have limited opportunities to kill real trophy bucks. vister
I've been told MN deer genetics arent behind IA, its getting the deer to an age where they show their potential that MN is lacking. thats exactly what I meant!! the only reason the may have more nicer deer is because there more deer that dont get shot, which allows them to get older, and hence, mature with nice racks. Iowa has WAY fewer hunters than MN, so less deer can get shot. imagine being in an intensive harvest area, and people tag 4 anterless deer, and a buck each year, every year, and them anterless deer are nubbin bucks. wow, thats a lot of future potential wiped out, isn't it?!regardless, having the hunting land i do, i would never shell out big bucks to hunt the edge of a corn field in iowa, when i'd rather go to the remote reaches of alberta and saskatchewan, and bag a massive 300 lb plus bruiser. yell at me if u wish, but thats just me! for the price of an iowa license for nonresidents, its like they dont appreciate out-of-towners there anyways
