portable ice house heaters

I have used them all. I personally use the Big buddy most often. It provides a lot of heat, safer in confined spaces, less chance of burning tent fabric and has a fan to blow heat if you want.

That said, the cooker/sunflower style are cheaper to buy and are lighter in weight if that is of concern. I still use a sunflower on occasion if I happen to pull my one man out by hand.

As for reliablity both will have problems. The sunflower types have thermocouplers exposed that get beat up and break. On my first buddy heater the ceramic plate fell out and lost the clips. The second one (Big Buddy) developed a leak on the tube to the pilot light (wouldn't light). It took me 45 minutes on the ice to tear the whole thing apart and tighten that fitting (thank God for leathermans!)

Buddy heater here too. I had a cooker for the last 6-8 years but it gets too hot for me. Also, with a buddy heater you can set it in your sled while in use, saves lots of space.

I like the Mr. Heater sunflower that connects directly to a 11# refillable tank.

No hoses to connect, no tipping of the heater, no problems with lighting or staying lit.

Plain and simple, it always works.

I have been using the same sunflower heater for almost 20 years.

Just take care of it and it will keep you warm.

For 1 man/small 2 man, little buddy. 2-3 man flipover I love my big buddy (hooked up to an external tank for longer outings). I love the fact that it is less likely to burn stuff that come in contact with it.

Only catch is that it is a tad bulky to haul, fragile, and questionable reliability. Had a problem with mine in -16 degree temps, good thing my buddy had a sunflower as a backup (put out more heat IMO). Now I am looking for a cooker/sunflower to buy so I always have a backup.

Another vote for big buddy heater. I have a sunflower heater too, and it's great, but I start getting light headed/nauseous after awhile even with the vents open on my portable. Personally I think the big buddy puts out just as much heat too, and actually Mr. Heater has it rated as slightly more (14,000 vs 18,000).

I have a sunflower that works well in my 8x8 house on skids.

Regular buddy that I sold to a friend after I bought a Big Buddy.

The BB is the ticket! Double the heat than the highest setting on the regular Buddy. Gets a little too warm when it's nice outside but perfect for those cold days!

Reeds in Onamia has the Big Buddy on sale for $89.

That's about as cheap as you'll find them.

Well worth the price!

We've typically used a sunflower cooker and melted the zipper on the portable last year. We're going out this week and we borrowed a regular buddy to try. Should be an interesting comparision. I'm hoping the Buddy melts the ice and snow around it less and looking forward to not worring about the zipper/fabric.

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
