You will be very happy living in this part of the world if you are a fisherman. LOTS of good lakes in the area. Panfish, walleye, pike, bass, musky all nearby. You will not be dissapointed.

Hi all, doing a family trip to Shell lake over labor day weekend. Hoping to do some walleye fishing there for the first time. Any tips on fishing them on this lake - bait, presentation, structure, depth, time of day?

If the walleye fishing is pretty poor, who is the crappie fishing and tips for targeting them?

Not looking for any specific location (but will take them if you have them) just general rules that work on that lake.

Thanks for your help

Only fished this lake once-a LONG time ago. As I recall it is very clear. Usually that means a night bite for walleye, especially this weekend with a full moon. Sorry I couldn't be more help.

Good luck.

A buddy of would have a family gathering on shell and he use to do real good fishing right out in the middle trolling live bait rigs. If I remember correctly he said it was a dishpan lake so you basically fished the deepest water.

I've caught a bunch of walleyes up there over the years but it has always been in April or May. Been doing more and more trolling each year, usually in south bay - figure out how high up off bottom the weeds are and pick a crank to go just over the tops of them. Wouldn't hurt at all to find some of the many cribs in there and either anchor up or troll around them. Have also had luck after dark casting raps on shallow rock points. Jigs and slip bobbers with live bait always produce fish but sometimes it can be hit and miss as I think the active fish are on the move - thus more trolling.

Wish I had more timely info for you but stick with the standard walleye tactics and you should be fine - pleny of them in there. Good luck.

Thanks for the help guys ... Cooter - like the suggestion on working the south bay, should be easy enough, but would expect quite a mixed bag for types of fish.

Looking at the map, I had assumed we would be rolling outside edges of the main lake during the day, maybe 20 (+/- 5fow), then moving more shallow at night.

jimalm - The middle of the lake is ~36 fow - seems like a big nomans land and no structure. Never targeted walleye that deep. When fishing the middle deep areas, were you rigging close to bottom, or did you find them suspended chasing bait fish?

Thanks again!

The little slimies can keep you busy at times indeed!

Targeted Musky on Shell a few weeks ago - couldn't keep them little buggers off any bucktail #8 blades and smaller, especially if you but plastics with a twister tail on the back hook.

Head up town when you get there and you'll see the library on the corner of the second block. Walk in the door and to the left is the library and on the right is the city managers office. Walk in there and you should see Brad, the city manager. He lives on the lake and usually knows about whatever the hot bite is and he's really good about sharing info. He also has free lake maps that have all the cribs marked on them.

They had an algea bloom when we got to the lake last Thursday, so the water clarity was not as good as earlier in the summer. Did pretty well this past weekend on eyes's. It was a lot of work finding them, but once we found them it was a pretty consistent bite.

Tried initially on the cribs a little bit ... all we caught were SMB & RB's. Heard there was some good sized sunny's being caught but never found them.

No luck on ski's, but a friend caught a nice 41+ on a weedbed.

Great weekend to be on the water, weather was great!!! Thanks again for the help everyone.

I was on Yellow for about 20 minutes Saturday before the weather came in and I had to pull the boat. Wasn't much time, but I did catch an 18 incher! The bite's been getting better the last few weeks. I'm sure it's only gonna get better.

Wish I could help ya, was looking at it longingly last weekend, but the hunting bug hits hard this time of year.

I can tell you that nice as it was last Sunday there were only about half dozen boats on the lake. If I were to go out for walleyes now, I'd get some bigger minnows (shiners or chubs or small suckers) and jig.

Good luck. Let us know how it goes.

Got out sat. morning and the weather did not cooperate to say the least, rain, wind and just plain out cold. Tough morning turned into a productive afternoon. No walleyes to show but did get into quite a few nice pike and some dandy panfish holding along the weedlines. Sunday the weather was much nicer fished till noon got a few more panfish and winterized the boat for the year.

Yesterday and today the lake was so nice and flat was wishing my boat hadn't already been put into storage. On the bright side, I shot a nice 10 pointer up there this weekend. smile
