sticknstring
Probably so... scrawny yearling sporting an abnormal rack. I had no intentions of shooting him but the other bow hunters and rifle crew come November will dispatch of him in short order. All one can do is try and set an example and hope others follow suit.Lets get back to the trail cam pics! I apologize for the interruption. Mark Christianson
Nobody is rippin. This is good discussion that could help others to better identify/guesstimate a deers age, therefore helping them better decide if they really want to take the shot. All good. Kyle
This is what this forum should be about. People discussing topics that apply to their hunting/fishing lifestyle. You definately didnt interrupt anything. Nice pics.
fishinmajishin
I shot an eight several years ago that dressed out at 122 lbs. Inside spread was 13.5". 1.5 yrs old.
vister
I'd let the one on the right go another year. But, some feel he is great now! He'll definetely be better next year. looks like he has got descent genetics.
HARDTIMES
It was fun watching this guys rack grow this summer. My kids are hoping he visits them this fall when there in stand.
Mark Christianson
Vister, The one on the right will not be let to go another year.In our area, its mostly tracts of land averaging 80 to 120 acres. And it gets hammered with hunting come gun season. At some point, you just have to decide if its worth another year, because there is something to be said about the ability of an area to continue to grow deer. If we had a section of land, I would be compelled to let him go another year maybe. MAYBE.He goes down by our rules on our land. No question. archerystud
Hey BLB,You forgot to mention that your buck on the left was eating some of your mineral all summer!!! He looks like a young one with great potential. The bigger one on the right looks similar to the bigger one I posted on page 13. If I see him real early I will pass. Mark Christianson
See that buck in your avatar AS? I have yet to shoot a buck with a bow, and he stands no chance of me not letting an arrow fly at him. No way. No How. Now if I bag him, and get a few under the belt with the bow, my standards will rise. Until then, he and his cousins better not come by me for a few years when I have my bow in hand. LOL
archerystud
I have no problem with anyone taking either of those two with any kind of weapon. They are both nice mature deer.I've been fortunate to get 5 nice ones under the belt so I'm probably getting greedy which means someone else will get lucky. I want to shoot something which breaks 150 someday.
slimngrizzly
I would say all of those bucks are 1 1/2 for sure, no matter where you are in MN. Except the buck on the right in BLBs photo. He looks like a dud 3 1/2, he just dont have the genes to ever be a giant probably. Still a trophy, mature deer. Wouldnt score well, but Id be proud of him. At least hes had some time to show what hes got.

At least hes had some time to show what hes got. I agree. its just what you want in a deer. that older deer, which I also agree would be a 3 wouldnt even break 110 with those maybe 5 inch tines. He would be a great first or upgrade with archery equip. because I dont think he's ever gonna be a superstud. They say that a deer will typically show over 90% of what they'll be by age 4, and I think that hes approaching that. He may put on another 20 and approach 130 someday, but in the scheme of things thats not a ton anyways. Shoot him for his smarts, not his rack! Jeremy Donabauer
Here's one we're chasing. What do you think he'll gross? How old?
smg04
WOW, thats a [PoorWordUsage] of a deer!!! good luck with him this season
ozzie
If the dates and time are correct on your pics then this deer must not travel far from the pile of apples as it was at that pile all day on the 28th!!! 1:37 am 28th/ 4:32am 28th/ and 9:08pm 28th!!!! I will guess at it being a 3.5-4.5 yr old deer nice body nice rack but not too gray in the face where it might be 5-6yrs old........just guessing though
BigWadeS
not sure about gross (160?) as I am not very good at that but I would say it is between a 4-5 yr old deer
Bear55
I would also guess 160-170 and a 4-5 year old. Awsome deer.
vister
How close to the apple pile is the bowstand! J/K anyhow, i'd say hes at least 4 yrs old. great looking deer though, hes a dandy. he'd easily go 160's though, but a bit more mass and he'd be a bruiser. nice and symmetrical.
Mark Christianson
4.5 to 5.5 and easily will hit 160.Beautiful.
Coach1310
He's old enough and big enough for me to shoot!!
96trigger
4-5 years old, he will easily gross 160 and probably push into the 170's gross. He's similar in tine length and mass to the one I shot last year that grossed 163, but he's wider and has at least 2 more points.
vitalshot5
i'm sorry but baiting them with apples and training them to stay there all night.....that's like training your dog to fetch and when you take him hunting and he brings you back a duck ya shoot him in the head....not hunting, just sad.
fishermn
Like anyone could train a buck of that age... I dont care if ya fed him apples every day all summer long, bucks of that size and age dont get that way by accident... And there is no law in MN about baiting for a trail cam unless you are in a juridiction that bans feeding.Nice pics, nice deer. Easy 160, probably pushing 170. Hope to see harvest pictures of him soon!
Flatcoats
I agree with the scores, but think that he's at least 5...awesome beam length! who gives a [PoorWordUsage] if he puts out apples to get a nice pic??? get real.
Bear55
Putting out apples to get some pics and hunting over apples are two different things, lets not jump to conclusions.
