BoxMN
Our recently passed away fishing and hunting buddy always called a big walleye "ol' lead pencil" I think "toad" is stupid... all the others are kind of cool.
fishgutz77
LisaTealz, I'm sure that you could put a whole new prospective on this discussion. I think it would be great to get another long line of discriptive adjectives from the ladies side of things. giver a whirl. On another subject, did you and other FM'ers make it to B-side to fish with scatfish for the closing of the trout season? We were up there but missed the gang.but I did meet hookset31. It was a great day to fish lakers.
Lisa Almquist
Some buddies and I did fish lakers on Burntside the last weekend it was open. We had a great weekend too. I caught more than just a sunburn! I saw your pics in the BWCA forum. Good job! I don't have a problem with anyone calling big chunky fish slobs or toads. I don't feel offended when my husband's pulling in a nice walley while saying, "this walter's got quite on pair of shoulders on HER!" We all have pet peeves. This just isn't one of them. Now if you outfish me...that'd be one!!
boatfixer
Well Lisa, they "Chubby or larger" fish do tend to females. 'Cept one time instead of saying "Shes got big shoulders" I said "Shes got big HIPS"....I got hit.And did you ever notice male birds are also prettier. God I love nature. Lisa Almquist
So what you're really trying to say is that you're prettier than your wife Bruce?
hhguide
The World is constantly changing so why not change names over time? Thats what I think I sure in a few years it will be something different. If you look up toad in the Dictinary it says "having a broader body and rougher Skin" and Pig says "This reflects a widespread IE tendency to name animals from typical attributes or activities" [Lass]. Synonyms grunter, porker are from sailors' and fishermen's euphemistic avoidance of uttering the word pig at sea, a superstition perhaps based on the fate of the Gadarene swine, who drowned." So I dont think its that bad I guess. I like calling my Fish Names Haha

muc33
PHAT is now going to be my P.C. word for fish. Since it is made up and not really a word, it must be safe. But that starts now, cause that big fat, pig, toad, hog of a Walleye I caught two weeks ago is already at the taxidermist!!!!!! Man she was a porker!!!I understand your point, but, for years I have used these names, and as soon as one of them comes out of my mouth, my wife knows exactly what I am talking about. If you put the context to the situation, no harm....no foul!
Down Deep
Judging from what some big fish have been called in my boat (" that is one big Mo#**#!!!*# and other foul names') "toad -pig - slob" is a much better use and more acceptable use of the english language. Traveler, most of the guys catching these fish are toads, slobs, pigs and fattys. A guy who can woo a fish with love talk is none other that Butch Furtman. Every fish in is his boat is " beautiful - wonderful - gorgeous".

rockman
Allright, I just watched Dean Capra catching bass at Lake Calhoun, on the Midwest Outdoors TV show.He caught one nice one and called it a 'stud'.So there goes any ideas in calling a fish,or a significant other(female),any given name. Tim_Anderson
Pig, Hog, Sow....when you catch a big springtime walleye, or late fall musky, they definitely do have a resemblance in the mid-section. I get excited and it just comes out (among other things)...can't help it! The guys always understand. Don't have a girlfriend or wife to have to worry about it. Maybe that's why...naaa, I doubt it! fishgutz77
If I'm not sure of the gender "horse" has been pulled out a few times when fishing muskies. this one goes both ways. but with fish over 48" chances are it is a fe-mama and out comes the long litney of names. The other half just laughs at this stuff and never takes any of it to seriously.A fishing buddy took me to a small lake by limestone and we were worming. I landed and released a 22+" bass and when I let her go I called her "moonpie",still don't know why, just did.
traveler
guys; the whole intent of this post has gone a ways off base. Comparing terms like hog, toad, etc...to names for a female was just an example, I could have used your kids or your mom (and probably should have) for the example. What I was trying to express was the appreciation thing...I just caught a fish of a lifetime/year/whatever, I'm not callin it a "toad"! I can see I'm in the (vast) minority here, so don't let me stop ya'all from having fun calling your catch whatever the heck you want to!
Northlander
Traveler relax and take a deep breath. No need to take it personel man. Everyone doesnt share your views but so what? I call fish all kinds of things good and bad. Doesnt mean I dont appreciate the fish if I call it a pig or slob. Quite the opposite. We can all agree to disagree on this and enjoy our fish how we see fit. As long as its legal and doesnt hurt anything that is.
