When to mount a slab crappie?

I just brought a 29 inch walleye and a 5 inch perch(chasing mount) to the taxidermist and his going rate was

$10 per inch on a real mount

$13 per inch on a rep

I'm not sure how competitive his rates are, but after seeing his work, money wasn't an issue.

Now THAT is a cool idea! I'd love to see a picture of that when you get it done.

There's more......pile of rocks on the floor with some eyes chasing perch and a half dozen other mules around the one that is being reeled up.

Maybe mix in a few gills.Do the whole water column type of thing.

My opinion on a "trophy" crappie is bigger than 15".

I've got a bunch of URL crappies from 14 1/2"-15" mounted and they do look sweet. Took plenty of years to finally sort out some pushing that 15" mark though.

An honest to god 16" crappie is a HUGE crappie. If I ever catch a 17" in Minnesota... Yikes!

Remember a proper measurement is mouth shut, on a bump board, with the tail pinched. An open mouth adds nearly 3/4" of an inch to the length of a crappie.

To me, a mount is about the moment, not the fish. Example, a young kids first crappie, or a group of crappies he caught that day. What ever the situation, if you want a solid memory all you have to do is look on the wall and there it is.

Myself, I've advanced in years so I've set goals for what I'll call a "Mountable" fish. My next crappie that goes to taxidermy will be 16", if I ever get one. I have 2- 14 1/2 inch crappies at taxidermy now, tho.

One idea i liked, was to mount more than one crappie at a time and have them just a bit smaller than the biggest so it really shows the size of the trophy.

Yup, I believe I suggested that idea on a previous post FishOn. I think it only makes sense if you plan on getting the mount done right away, otherwise it may take years for you to get a school of 3-4 crappies 15-17 inches long. For me personally I have two 14" crappies on the wall which aren't the biggest but I got them mounted with 10 1/4" bluegill and 9 1/4" pumpkinseed on a piece of driftwood all from the same winter/spring season. They aren't the biggest fish but the memories of each fish that I caught and stories behind them are really why I got them mounted and to do it while in college is something special IMO. I also accomplished another goal of mine that I thought would of been cool since I was a kid was a school of bluegills one pound or bigger on a piece of driftwood, and I accomplished that while in college too. I just need to save up the money to get the school done now. Crappiekeith thats a pretty sweet idea with the whole water column scene, and just shows you the hard work a guy puts in to catching big fish like that!

My goal now is to catch a 15 or 16" crappie someday, and shoot for a 1 lb 8 oz or 2 pound bluegill. I know both goals are attainable since I'm still pretty young, I just need to put in my time and try to get a job in northern minnesota! \:\)

I have two 14.5" crappies on my wall both from my last trip to Red. The only reason I went ahead and mounted these was because they were the only two I caught the whole weekend and I figured that they could be the last two I would catch up there. We returned the following year only to be blanked on crappies and hammered the 'eyes, this was the winter before they opened it up. So in my eyes I think I made a good decision on keeping a memory.

Any crappie over 12" outside of Red is a nice slab. I know there are many of you out there that have caught bigger, but if I can latch into a 15" I'll do a replica. Maybe I'll be lucky enough to add a couple more to the mount.

I totally agree.

I follow on the idea of having a mount mean something to you. Who cares about the size, if it feels right to you, and you can justify it to yourself. Who gives a rip about the size. I very well might have the first deer my daughter shoots shoulder mounted, just because. I have tried to get her to let me mount a couple of real nice fish she has caught, but she won't let me cause they aren't good enough for HER, and that is her call.

I say go with your heart, and of course your pocketbook, I know guys who have fish in the freezer they caught 3 years ago. I never have that kind of stamina, If I get something I want to have taxidermy work done on, I call my buddy right a way and have him come get it started.

Mount what you feel right about and don't worry so much about size, if it feels right, it probably is!

I got my biggest yet last night, 15.5", took a couple pics and let it go. It was missing some tail so I will know if I catch it again when its over 16". It was huge but the thought of mounting never crossed my mind, it would have to be over 16 for sure, and even then, I cant bring myself to take fish this size out of small metro lakes so I would get a replica, they look better and last longer, and then that fish has a chance to hit 17". There would be more 17's if more people did this :-)

    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
    • reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.
