Marcum versus Vexilar?

Another thing i really like is when you get someone that you don't know come in and park right on top of you. drilling holes all around you. then sets up with in 10 yards of me. I just turn that gain up a bit. It floods out their elctronics and get them to move.

Increasing the gain does NOT increase output power. All it does is increase the "sensitivity" of the receiver, allowing you to read smaller (weaker) signals. The output power on Marcums and Vexilars is fixed. You were already flooding out their electronics as soon as they arrived......

The screen is better on the 20. However, for the money you want the flasher that does what you want any flasher to do in the most varied of circumstances because no two lakes are the same and no two spots on a lake are the same. The LX-5 will give you what you want to see in the most different situations making it the better choice. Everything else is opinion.

I'm looking to up grade this year after 11 years of FL-8.thanks everyone for the info there was as much here as the web sites, only in plain fishing lingo. You guys that have the 18's and the 20's does the dual beam transducer come with the pro pack? I fish alot of deeper water, white fish, lakers ect. this is the deciding factor for me. Power is'nt everything here it's the sensitivty of the reciever is it not? still undecided

I fished the Brainard Extravaganza this weekend and out of the 7 holes I fished only one gave me problems with interference. I have an LX5 and during the tournament it was unbelievable. I switched to the 8 degree cone and lost everybody elses lures. Most of the people using their flashers had them off because of the noise or all the lures in the water. On lake of the woods last week I used 20 degree ducer so I could watch both of my lures. I kept them at different depths so I knew which one was interesting to the fish. I have never used a Vex however I bought the best flasher money could buy last year and I am very happy with it.

A little off topic, but.. I always find my self saying "On my Vexilar I saw fish at 20'" and I do not even own one. I have a marcum. So now I try to say 'flasher'. If I say "I saw lots of fish on my marcum" does that mean flasher or camera? \:\)

On a side note, now the forum auto links sponsored words?

I've seen this info posted around on quite a few fishing forums, not sure if it is true or not. I've never seen or read anyone try to refute it.. It is from a post by Duane Cummings, he works for marcum. The entire post can be found here

Receiver sensitivity : Receiver sensitivity is the measurement of a sonar receiver’s ability to detect an input signal. This measurement tells just how small of a return signal the unit is able to pick up and display.

Measurement:

LX5- 24uV

FL20- 40uV

Good luck, LB

My FL-18 was worthless at the Extravaganza.Every IR frequency was tried, but I couldn't clear up the screen.I suppose there were too many other Vex's close by, and one LX-5 about 40 feet away. I wasn't too pleased with the results.I may have to give the LX-5 a closer lookin' at.Either that, or leave the flasher at home next year, if I fish the contest.

Fished yesterday in my dads Mankato house and I had my MarCum LX2 in one corner and he had his Vex FL18 in the other- we had absolutely no problems with interference. I do have to say, the colors are alot more crisp and bright with the MarCum

Man....tons of good info. In a nutshell.....it sounds like the Vex's have a "nicer" display and one that is easier to see from different angles. However the zoom is fixed for the bottom 6 or 12 ft and the dual angle x-ducer is optional. With the Marcum's you get the dual angle transducer plus a zoom which is adjustable up the column plus a soft case. If the Marcums had a fancy screen I'd be on my way to find one right now.

I don't know if there is something different in this regard on the FL-20 but I used to recieve a TON of interfierence on my FL-8 when ever I was near anyone else with a flasher. Now with my FL-20 I never get so much as a blip on the screen and I can fish in my permanant with another flasher less than 4 feet away in the next hole. I have fished next to FL-8s, Fl-18s and Marcum Lx3.

On a similar note, I may just be nuts in the head, but another reason I chose the vex is because my neighbor used to have an old Zercom clearwater classic. If you remember those, you will know that this is the technology that Marcum is based on. It was a good unit but with all of its power it would knock out anything around. He was the only one who could use his flasher if we were trying to fish in the same honey hole. He used to brag about this ability and I would tell him that's OK for guys who have no friends but I like to get along with other people and fish next to them without causing a lot of interfierence. Maybe the newer units today don't do that but it has always stuck with me.

Dual beam is ONLY available on the LX-5. It's not available on any other Marcum flasher.

Dual beam is an option on ANY Vexilar flasher (FL8, FL12, FL18, FL20)

This is true, however the dual transducer is standard on the LX-5 whereas it is an OPTION on the the FL-20, meaning you will have to pay extra to get it.

LOL! Yeah....isn't that what I just said? confused.gif

By the same token. If you want to stay on the less expensive end, you can buy an FL8 AND get the dual beam. You CANNOT buy an LX3 or VX1 and have the dual beam.

You can't buy ANY Vexilar with adjustable zoom either.

They're different units, with different features at different price points. It's up to the consumer to judge what's best for him or her, and get the most for their money.

Funny...I thought we were talking about dual beam transducers..... confused.gif

You also can't buy ANY Mar cum with a flat screen display viewable from multiple angles...or with a daytime and night-time brightness setting...or with your choice of 3 carrying systems..and so on and so forth. But that's not really what we were talking about, was it??

I just wanted to be sure that BigDave understood that a dual beam ducer is not available on ALL Mar cums. Judging from his post I think he thought they all had it.

Besides, if someone is opting for an FL8/FL12, they obviously don't need/want ANY zoom. That being the case, why would they even CARE about an ADJUSTABLE zoom??

I returned my LX5 and went back to my FL18 for the simple fact that the LX5 for the most part knocked out all the Vexilars that I fish with and I fish with 8 fishermen with Vexilars out of 10 on average.

Also like stated above the movable zoom to me was big disappointment and a hassle I can easily see any suspended fish with my FL18.

I have no doubt this was planned on Marcums end and maybe some day Vexilars will do the same and we won't be able to use any of the flashers around one another.

Vexilar to DEATH!

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
