legal or not legal????bait question

I think this idea was first used in the late 60's by putting go-go dancers in flashy outfits inside a steel cage and suspending from the ceiling at bars. It did attract males who were able to see but not touch. Other females would then go after the distracted males swirling around the cages. Hmmm might work.. grin.gif

I don't know if it is legal or not but it is in an old guides manual from Herter copyrighted 1966. shocked.gif

It is on page 5 under the title of 3 Proven Methods Of Increasing Your Fish Catches When Still Fishing.

"Take 3 or 4 gallon vinegar glass jugs, punch holes in the caps and put a dozen or more minnows in them and fill them with water. Lower the jugs to the desired fishing depth on small ropes. Fish close to the jugs. This method works well when fishing from boats or docks."

There are a whole bunch more tips in this book and some of them are illegal now but my guess would be that they wern't when it was written. smile.gif It was called "Professional Guide's Manual" and was written by George Leonard Herter for the North Star Guide Association. Published in Waseca, MN by Herter's Inc.

When I get some time I'll scan in some of it and will post it. It makes for some interesting reading. grin.gif

Well dump, in a few years I'll have to be hauling around a dozen weeds with mayo jars at the bottom with minnows in them, a dozen fake crappie lures 3 of which are motorized, one of which is a remote control with a camera mounted in the nose so you can swim it around the lake looking for fish, underneath it will be a laser guided missile..... Its getting tough to keep up with the joneses grin.gif

Funny how easy it is to stir the pot.

My grandfather used to do this when ever he went ice fishing and there where many times, when the glass jar would freeze to the bottom of the lake, so you would just have to snap the line. I can't say that I really notice any improved fishing with the jar of minnows, but I was a kid.

My grandfather also use crushed up eggs shells and drop those down the hole. So I suppose that will turn into a big debate on legality.

Everybody needs to stand back and look in the mirror, and realize who it is they see..........

You know, there are radio controlled planes that you can attach video cameras to. I don't know if I've ever seen a radio controlled submarine, but I'm sure the technology is there. Like said put a camera in the nose, give it a fish shaped body, a GPS tracking device, wireless video signal to your aqua view or 50" plasma in the perm and you could then effectively video troll the bottom looking for fish or unfound structure with the ability to save coordinates that it finds. Launch and retrieve it from a spear hole. You could also catch other peoples lures. How far out in the future is something like that, and how much would it cost?? laugh.giflaugh.gif I think they use tools like this to search for drowning victims sometimes.

You're right "gopher_nation," we already have all of the technology for relatively cheap. Someone just has yet to stamp "Nature Vision" on it and sell it.

( Note from Admin, please read forum policy before posting again,thank-you.)

I think that we can all agree that fishing can be as technical and gimmicky or as simple as we want it to be. I like to try new things, it's fun!

My kid is graduating from IT in a couple of weeks and has been working on a project that involves use of GPS and remote controls. Not a submarine, but maybe a start.

Any investors out there want to get started on this ?

I have read this numerous times in some of the bigger name fishing magazines, they have always stated, check with your local CO, dont take the word from someone, its not that difficult to search for the MNDNR HSOforum and send them an email or call them to ask this, my preference would be to email them, cuz then I would have a document from them saying that, they stated it was legal, it might help me out nad might not.

My concern about this menthod like the real weeds is the tangles that might occur if your fishing a "hot spot" and people have tip ups out, or you have one of those pesky snot rockets come in and slamm your stealth jig. I think that this option would more than likely work as some of the scents from the jar would escape and Im sure the minows would be in a panic and put out more of that scent. I wonder what that 3 lb crappie would be thinking Wth..why cant I get these ..... grin.gif

As always play it safe on the first ice out there...

Take a old pickle or mayo jar (glass) poke some holes in the lid place your minnows in the jar and submerge in a hole obviouslly attatching a line to pull back up. in therory looks like a school of minnows to attract fish. legal or not that is the question.

It would be legal right up until the jar broke, then it would be illegal. And unethical.

The premise seems dubious at best though. If the idea is that fish swim over to see the little school of minnows in the jar, at least some of them are going to look through the curved portions of the jar, see a ginormous fish-eating minnow, and scatter.

Yes it is legal. Old antique sporting equipment collectors will pay top dollar for old minnow jars. They used to be used with lights (illegal with lights now FYI) to bring in fish. They are still legal and some guys put their unused spear decoy suckers down to attract fish this way.

Fish attraction is really taken to the next level in todays' day in age. We have fake vegetation for structure. Some guy mentioned crappie decoys like duck decoys. A couple years ago at a show I saw someone selling lines of bluegill color cutouts laminated on a string and the guy swore by them. I met an old timer on a little lake up north that used to use used-car lot colored pennants on a string to attract gills and crappie in deep water in mid summer. You've probably seen the ads for those little fish sound emitting devices that are supposed to bring in fish (I think Uncle Al Linder even tested them on one episode of In-Fish).

The point is people will use whatever they want as long as it is

A) Within the laws of MN

and

B) Within their own morality. And that my friends is up to the individual, so please don't preach here (Ladies and Gents I give you...The Outdoors Discussion Forum! grin.gif)

One could say about all the devices listed above that they can be illegal. Yes, if you don't remove them they will become illegal because they aren't attended or they are left behind and littered. But if you don't do just that, you can use them when you go out.

I forgot about that one but remember reading it my old Herter's Guide Book. It was right by the tip where you throw egg shells down the hole so you could see fish between you and the bottom. Not quite sure the legality of either one?

Now I'm going to have to dig out that old book if I can find it. It's chock full of good tips like that:)

NyQuiLlama,

I would not be angry. You are new to site and (I think) you posted a link to another site. If you read policy, this is not a good thing to do.

Do not worry, my first post was deleted grin.gif. I learned right off how good this site is.

Good luck!

Welcome and post as much as you want, with in forum policy.

    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
    • reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.
