Cabela10
What lake or part of the state has the potential to produce the next state record largemouth and/or smallmouth? It seems as though the far north and far south are producing the 6 to 7+lb bass. What lake has the next lake record swimming in it right now? Deitz Dittrich
Bobby, I would be willing to bet there are quite a few lakes that have a state record bass in it... But dont get caught because they got that big for a reason!I would say that a lake without a ton of fishing pressure will be the next to kick out a hog.. but then again. I would be willing to bet Tonka has multiple state records in it.
Coach Dog
My prediction: Smallmouth will come out of Mille Lacs Largemouth will come out of Tonka or Waconia Can you tell I put a lot of thought into this?

bassNspear
There is no reason that Tonka should not have a state record in that baby. For all the fish that are in there, and the water that is there, there should be a some hawgs in there.
FishinChad
I would agree you dont have to travel far to have a shot at a new record, just like the last one was caught just outsite the west metro. There are quite a few lakes around here that have big largemouths, and I would think most have a great chance of having a state record in them, and I have found there are a few lakes that pretty much nobody fishes, at least for bass, that have 6lb+ fish, but are extremely hard to find shortly after bass opener. rangerforme
Also with the weather staying warmer earlier and later every year is seems the growing season for bass is being extended little by little it won't be long till its broken again. I've seen multiple 6+ fish caught in tournaments this year.
Central Bassman
It is going to come out of a lake that is in the north country. I will agree with Mr Deitz on this one, it will come out of a little lake that doesn’t get a lot of pressure. There are quite a few little lakes that don't get fished for bass up there. Tonka and Waconia have a great chance at kick out a State record but I just don’t see it happening with all the boat traffic. If it does, I’m guessing she will get caught at night!!!! Fishing_High
I agree think I think it will be a smaller lake that doesn't get heavily fished. I fish a small chain of lakes south of the whitefish and i've seen a couple of 6 pounds the last two years.
Hammer Handle
I fish on a small lake and nearly evey year I catch a 4 - 6 pound bass.I agree that it will come from a small lake that is not fished much...just like the world record did. lookincalifornia
do you guys think that some of the lakes/ponds that are stocked with winter trout can produce a big bass like out here in cali?
katoguy
Last contest of the year a couple weeks back, only 13 boats... 5 over 6# weighed and one that went 7-0. You guys can stay up in the metro.
EBass
Quote: do you guys think that some of the lakes/ponds that are stocked with winter trout can produce a big bass like out here in cali? Good Q - I don't think the strain that we have up here will allow them to get that big plus the shorter growing season. But I know a few lakes that have trout (rainbows), bass and pike. 20lb pike are caught almost every year and we caught some 5lb largies and 4lb smallies. Granted those aren't close to MN state records, but give them some time.
Fishing_High
To add the small chain of lakes we fish theres so much forage no fishing pressure and bait fish swimming every where all the fish do is eat eat eat. Here's my buddies 21.5 inch from this year. 21.
french_lake_kid
Its possible that both could come out of tetonka
Cabela10
Great replys everyone thank you. I would like to take a trip some weekend, either down towards Mankato or up north to fish a lake that has potential for the next smallie or largie record. Obviously it's a lot of work, and I know this, but I think it would be fun to try for it, since I haven't really cared before.A tournament that produces 5 bass that are around 6lbs and one over 7lbs. You do not even see that at Waconia which was off limits for a while to make the fish that big.I fish Minnewashta with a buddy and that lake is catch and release only, that lake will be just like Waconia when they lift the C/R only. jalberg
I used to think it would be a metro area lake since the last one was from here, but I heard someone from the park rapids area caught a 8lb 4oz largemouth this year. i have a cousin who lives there who saw the picture at a local tacle store. He said it looked legit. So, maybe it could happen up there.
TurnUpTheFishing
There are lots of lakes with potential but If I had to start narrowing it down I would say the that lakes in the southern half of the state have a far greater chance and producing a 9lb plus fish. Do you have any specific lakes that may produce? I haven't fished below Lakeville in the metro but I have fished the far north, like Vermilion. jalberg
What is the Iowa state record bass? If it's over 9 or 10lbs, I'd say stay south in your search. If it's around the same as our record, then maybe a couple hundred miles of latitude doesn't matter that much.
jalberg
Just checked Iowa State record Bass.. 10lb 12oz. That's almost 2lb heavier than ours. My money's on the Southern part of the state. As for which lake, could be any of them really.

Nah, I dont have any particular lakes in mind but like the last two posts pointed out the further south you go the bigger the fish get. Longer growing seasons. Maybe more fertile waters that bass are more suited too?I bet the southern pools of the mississippi hold a good number of 9-10lb fish but they have so many places to hide, some may never see lures. river rat316
I doubt it, with the number of tourneys on those southern pools they get pressured... everywhere
