Ice Fishing Goals 07-08

Recommended Posts

Somebody always starts one of these goals threads for a specific species or year.

This year I want to hit more new lakes than last year, spend more time on more lakes targeting lake trout, hit the Horseshoe Chain for cats, and just plain get out more. If I hit some big fish, all the better. I'm sure I'll get into my fair share, but I don't have any real goals I have to hit for size. I also want to get out spearing more. Last year I didn't even buy the license or go.

I would like to get one more panfish rod and a deadstick rod. Honestly though I have way too much gear. I think I'm up to like 10-11 ice rods. I have as many ice rods as I do open water rods I think!

Overall, my goal is just to get out more and fish more. That should be a good goal for everyone.

What are your goals for the ice season?

Be able to go out and fish as much as I did last year and still have the same luck. Maybe a few more trips to Red and LOW. I made 6 FM events last season and hope I can do them all again this year along with the Burntside Bash as that was the highlight of my ice season last year. The Ely gang does a fine job with this event. Nothing like a laker around 6-8 pounds in 80 feet of water.

As far as equipment, not much needed but I'm sure there will be a new rod or two and maybe another smaller Otter for early season ice.

Drill so many holes that the lakes look open rather than frozen.

I'm excited for ice but will be patient because there's still a ton of open water fishing left.

Good luck,

Corey Bechtold

I've gotta agree with you Corey.

Otherwise I'd like to make a couple of FM events that I've missed in the past. I'll continue to hit the Slabfest and Coolcats events. In addition, Burntside is calling my name this winter. laugh.gif

Not really a goal, but rather a wish. "To have ice early, thick enough, and last long enough to get out as much as I can". On another point - I would like to see a year we don't lose anybody to falling through the ice.

I've been known to start a goal topic or two. grin.gif

I'm not really sure what this year's goals are going to be yet...

I do know I would definitely like to fish with Jim Hudson again this winter on Chequamegon Bay. Its been 2 years now and wanted to make the trip last year but couldn't. Jim's a great guy to fish with and has a tremendous AND unique fishery in his backyard.

I would also like to break the 30" mark for a walleye through the ice. That goal has been pretty elusive for me.

I would also like to make it back to Chequamegon Bay again for those smallies. That's a blast! And I'm with you on the 30-inch walleye through the ice Chris. Also plan on fishing a lot of cats again this year.... and of course panfish grin.gif Going to be another great year, but like Corey said, the best of open water is yet to come! smile.gif

To get the new gf to like going fishing with me, that way I cant get in trouble for going out fishing every night after work... I would only be scouting and finding all the fish so when she goes with we will catch a ton of fish.... its all for HER ya know wink.gifgrin.gif

I'd like to get to more FM events this winter. Slabfest has been a blast and I'll definately be back. I hear Coolcats calling my name, also.

That sound about right. A few more FM events would be nice....

I believe channel cats will be a new primary focus for me. I plan to spend a bunch of time on the ice learning how to hook and ice those buggers.

Lots of panfishing of course. Maybe grab ahold of a crappie over 14" on URL, or anywhere!

I'd like to get a few limits of Jumbo perch this season. I'm going to set out a trip or two exclusively for pike. That's something I have not done for a while.

So Dak a few times. I'd really love to catch a "prize" fish in the Brainard Ice Extravaganza. Caught 6 dinks last year.

I will also be attending as many FM events as I can make. I've been doing about 4 each year.

Winning a few UPLR events would be icing on the cake!

Last winter was my first ice season and in about ten or more outings I only managed to catch one fish. This year I will have the benefit of GPS and Lakemaster's waypoints so my goal will be to get something every time out. And maybe to get a cheap three wheeler smile.gif.

To try out all my new plastics on the pannies this winter.

To try to get some waldo's to bang the lures without the traditional minnow.

To get on and stay on the Mille Lacs perch for as long as I can.

To try some of the southern Minnesota lakes for crappies/sunnies and perch.

Catching a trophy size Rainbow Trout or Splake through the ice. I need to raise my wife's blood pressure when I tell her I am getting another fish mount! grin.gif

Also, catching a Lake Trout over 30 Lbs.

Getting on the ice before Thanksgiving would also be nice!

Hmm. Bring my ice 'eye record to my open water 'eye record of 28" and change from 25" and change. smile.gif Spend as many nights, or more, in the shack this winter. Pray hard enough that a big heave doesn't come between the ice road and the shack. Spend more daytime being mobile and hunting Perchies. To not get wet on the lake this year. frown.gif

    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
    • We have bought a new boat, which we will be picking up this spring. It is an Alumacraft Competitor 165 sport with a 90 horse Yamaha motor. I will be buying and installing a trolling motor,  wondering if I can get some recommendations on what pound thrust I will want for this boat?  Also, I will be selling my old boat, is there a good way to determine the value on an older boat ( mid-80's with a 75 horse 2-stroke  Mariner motor)  I will appreciate any help with these questions.
    • Sketti...  not out of a jar either!
    • Lol yeah I watched that
