Ice Fishing...

Recommended Posts

Well that was the plan... until I saw the wind and got a report on slush so Big Bay didn't happen so I went on a short jaunt with Todd looking to put Amanda on some fish to catch and it just didn't happen. It was really windy out there just trying to keep the trap shut was a chore. We marked a couple of fish and it just didn't happen for us but another great time had with Todd and as the saying goes will get em next time.

Yesterday Franky, Wayne, Bill and Al all fished Delta very few keepers but a boatload of fish caught, pretty much fish on the LX-5 all day long. Guys with tip ups were very busy late.

Insurance Guy how did you finish up? And how was the King today?

ENY Tyler how did you make out this weekend?

Big Johnny Ice - Hey bud how was Conesus?

Franky and I were at North Shore's Bash on the Beach last night and had a great time as always, Thanks Greg and Mo!

Well Timmy, the get together at Conesus was yesterday, and it was a blast. About 30 guys showed up for our little 'party'. The fishing was slow. I went for perch out deeper and didn't even mark a fish in the first ten holes I drilled. Finally marked some in 19FOW on the east side of the lake, but there were only 9 inchers. Fished for perch for about 4 hours and then moved to the shallows where the main hut was set up with grill and food already going. Ate some goodies and set up for sight fishing those dink gills. Yes, there are a ton of them and all were under 8". Saw no crappie, but some were caught in our group. I must have caught over 100 gills in there from noon till 4pm. It was fun, but got boring after awhile. They hit anything. The pike crew must have had around 80 tip ups in the shallows. 'Speed' had the hot area with his personal best pike and crappie. Here are some pics courtesy of Hali-man.

I learned a valuable lesson yesterday...always wear you cleats. Took a tumble about 50 yds from shore. The whole day I was Ok because there was a little slush on the ice, but when I left, it got below freezing and the standing water froze in a small area. Needless to say, I now have a slightly sprained ankle mad.gifmad.gif

Nice fish Speed... Johnny sounds like there were plenty of small fish to go around yesterday but it was fun just catching and marking fish. I had the creepers in the bucket yesterday just in case I needed em and the walking was pretty good yesterday and today. I have taken to many spills on the ice to go without especially now that I'm get older. Glad you got in some good fun with the boys, take care of that ankle...

Hit Oneida again and another limit of sunfish and 4 short for crappies. Tim, whoever gave you the report on slush should be slapped smile.gif it wasn't bad yesterday afternoon and it locked up solid last night and was EASY walking. I was looking for you all morning buddy.

The report: Fished away from the crowd for the second day and was in fish from 6am - 11am, I just couldn't get the last 5 crappies for the total limit. It seemed like the barometer or something changed around 11am because the fish totally shut down and the one's who did move to the bait would look at if for a long time and just shy away. It isn't easy fishing by anymeans, I had 2 friends (Good fishermen) fish with me (without a flasher) and one of them only had 4 fish and the other 6 fish. The lure for the morning was a willow leaf (pink on top, glow on bottom with orange dot in the middle) and I think that really made a big diffence because my buddies tried everything they had (no willows smile.gif )and just couldn't get them to bite.

Tim, One of my buddies was going to try and get a Marcum right on the ice. wink.gif

Al and I showed up at BB around 1 pm for the "late afternoon run." Wayne stayed home to try to get a tax refund. We moved quite and bit and kept ourselves entertained by all the shacks that followed us around. LOL Only on BB!! Plenty of chippers to go around but nothing big beyond about 4 inches!! As Lee said, the walking was easy, but you could tell it was challenging earlier in the week when you drilled. Al could not put his shelter up for fear of ending up on Sylvan Beach so he sat out in the open and then called it a day after about 2 hours. I stuck it out until 5 and figured it was good exercise moving around the bay and drilling holes. Which is all I did . . . it was dead land below the ice! Had movement on the bottom but nothing would come higher than about 6 inches.

That crowd is crazy Frank, I fished Sat morning and was one of the first people out there and when everyone came out and seen you pull a fish they weren't shy about drilling within 2' of you. mad.gif I had to ask a guy if he wanted to sit on my bucket or maybe help himself to a fish or two when he decided to fish the hole I left my bucket at so nobody would fish it. That's why I decided to find some of my own fish in the afternoon and it payed off. The fish stayed in one area because they didn't get 50+ holes drilled on thier head. smile.gif Had a buddy who fished there on Friday and was only 1 of the 4 people out there and he caught his limit of sunfish and crappied from 1-2:30pm. I usually never fish BB on a weekend because of all the people / traffic but that bite was way to hot to not go. People don't realize that the fish you see being caught aren't the only fish in the bay, there's a lot more of untapped fish in the bay just waiting to be caught but nobody wants to go and find them and it just makes me scratch my head, OH well just more fish for me to find and catch on my own. grin.gif

Timmy I'm not at work, home today with bad headache. Email me at [email protected].

You are right . . . it is a characteristic of the Oneida crowd. In the Summer when I am bass fishing, I often want to ask the boats that pull next to me if they want to pay any guide fees. Al and I moved quite a bit but never got into any big fish . . happens. I wanted to go deeper after Al left but with the wind and being by myself thought it best not to.

Frank, If you went out to the crowd you went 100 yard to far. You need to stay in more and to the right, there is a 4' hump that the fish feed on in the early mornings and evening and there is an Awsome (still standing) weed bed right next to it in 8' that they drop down into during mid day. It's hard to find and I forgot my GPS both days to mark it. confused.gif

Al has it on his GPS and we talked about it, now we know . . . Lee Thanks for the info . . . sounds exactly like the kind of place I was looking for, 8ft and a drop off with weeds. We did not go to the crowd . . . they came to us . . .must have been that red cover on the flasher!! LOL

My buddy fished today in the spot and he got 20 big sunfish in less then an hour but it got so bad out there that when he lifted his trap he could see 10', he started for shore(what he thought was the right way) because he was by himself and a little scared and ended up near the creek on the wheeler. frown.gif

Thunder, We clean every single one of them and let me tell you we have one heck of a pile of fish.

Where's Tim, I haven't seen him post in awhile.

Hey Dumac I sent you an email at home bub... Hey Lee did you buy Mike Walerak's LX-5 I saw you were inquiring on it?

Just wanted to let you guys know that USMC Steve has re-upped for another year in the Marines, that means the walleyes on Oneida will not be safe grin.gif

ENY Tyler - Hey dude what's happening, I'll give you a call tonight.

We picked up about 4" of snow in the driveway yesterday and this morning there was another 3" of new snow that fell after I cleared the driveway yesterday.

Richfield Springs schools were closed today . . .wonder if that was for the cold or the snow fall. Canaderago may have taken another hit and with the warm weather next week . . .we could be hurting to get on it.

Tim, I was going to buy it but I'm happy with the VX-1 right now and will buy a new one with next years taxes. I'm trying to buy a 2005 Alumacraft Lunker 165 with 40hp on it, the guy wants $7000 for it and it's like brand new. I think that's a good price.

Canadarago snow report - Travel on the east side of the lake non-existent without snow shoes just got a report from Mohawk Valley Joe. He went to Gander and picked up a pair of snow shoes for $179. This weekend it was terrible walking and he was the only one out there as far as he could see off the east side, nobody south... Oh well...

nope, not going alone . . .maybe bass fishing but not ice. I got a report on the ice conditions/walking on Canaderago for last Sunday from the boat ramp. Not only was the walking good but the fish were cooperative too. And there I was on Oneida!!!

Change of plans crazy.gif Boys went to Delta tried to park off Stokes wrong move (posted). I'm fishing tomorrow, I'll check LC for access first thing and then I'll swing over to the launch area if LC is still a mess.
