Your '06 Musky Goals...

Recommended Posts

Was sitting around tonight, sharpening some hooks for the upcoming northern opener here in WI, and got to talking with the wife about what we want to accomplish this year on our musky hunts... The biggest goal, and first I want to accomplish, is to get Hannah hooked up with her first 'lunge. She went at it hard last season the few times she tagged along, and got really into it after having many follows. Now shes pumped more then ever to hook and land her first ever (I think shes more excited for opener then I am)!!! And being her, this first fish will have to come on her fly rod, as that is how she loves to fish. It will definately be an exciting day for me!!

Other then that goal, I am excited to fish some new water, try some new tactics, and fish with some new people this year.

How 'bout the rest of you musky hunters? Any one goal or two that you want to fullfill this season?

Hit it big, quit my job and fish every musky water in MN. grin.gif

I want to do more open water fishing on Mille Lacs, out in the middle looking for bait pods or other micro structure that is holding miss piggy. I truly believe the mother of all musky is laying out in the middle of that big pond around four or five big rocks just getting fat.

Learn where the big gals hang out in 'Tonka- both pike and muskie. Bought my first dedicated muskie rig this winter and would like to break it in...

I could tell you but it will cost you grin.gif Going to break that 50" barrier. If I don't get her by fall on Tonka then I am going to hit Mille Lacs. Jon, does that mean I need to buy something in red ?

My Goal is simple as this will be my first true season chasing musky. Just put one in the boat, than move up to the 40" mark, etc I have tangled with 2 muskys and landed one of them while fishing for SMB so they do not count. Need to justify the lure purchases from this winter man thats fun!!! So much cooler than buying walleye and SMB plain jane tackle. Have a great year!!! grin.gif

I'm with JKH and would love to get the Mrs on her first fish! I think that would make planning the summer vacations to Vermillion or LOTW a lot easier!

For me personally: I want to get over that 49.5 inch barrier. I'd also like to have a multiple fish day, 2 in one day, haven't done that yet.

Jon: I agree with your Mille Lacs theory, big piggys are out on those flats.....somewhere. I'll split the lake with you and we each have 60,000 acres to search!! grin.gif

My main goal is to reverse the trend that I've had in recent years. Since my best year of 2002, my fish totals have gone down considerably each year since. Of course, time on the water has been the main factor there. So maybe the real goal should just be to get on the water more.

I have a few goals this season. First one is to catch one that is over 40". Second one is to help the girlfriend catch one, size doesn't really matter, just as long as it's not bigger then anything I've caught. If that happens, I'll never hear the end of it. grin.gif And my biggest goal for this season is to beat my brother in our contest. There's $100 on the line. We are keeping track of all the muskies that we catch for the season and keeping points, just like the PMTT scoring system. Should be alot of fun. grin.gif

One of my fishing goals is actually to fish muskies less this year! I plan on fishing other species more often and not just chasing skis whenever I get out. When the conditions are right, I'll chase skis. However, when the conditions aren't what I'm looking for with regards to muskies, I'll look for walleyes, bass, and catfish. I know, I know, I'm a fishing whore. This hasn't been my M.O. for the past couple years and I am starting to miss my old friends, the marble eye, the weed carp, and Mr. Whiskers. After a miserable year last year, I bet I still catch more muskies this summer than last. Even with my cutting down on toothy critter hunting, here are my goals for the year:

1) at least six muskies each time out

2) average fish 48"

3) a dozen fish over 50" and one over 54"

Do these seem a bit optimistic? Given that I replaced all of my old lures with red and pink and I plan on fishing Leech this summer, it seems realistic to me. tongue.gifgrin.gifsmirk.gifwink.giflaugh.gif

I'd love to land one fish this summer. Last summer I was muskyless. To complete the goal I need to spend more time on the water than last year which shouldn't be very hard. smirk.gif

Scoot,

I would set your goals a little higher. Those are pretty average expectations, even for the beginner.....

The six fish per outing is probably about right. But you should be able to average 50" with a couple over 60". I think you're selling yourself short. No reason you won't be the new world record holder after 2006. Then we can put the world record debate to rest!

Hey Guys,

With muskie season right around the corner. My goals are

to catch 10 to 15 muskies this year. Also try to catch one

on a walk the dog topwater like the Weagle or the Maas Marauder. Also try to catch one on Invader, Bulldawg, and

Kiler Eel.

I am a simple person, I just hope to go muskie fishing more often than last year. I hope to catch a few muskies without harming myself, others or the fish. I also hope not to break any rods or lose to many lures. I hope to spend a lot of time in the boat with friends and family...and not talk about work....and...my final hope is to meet more of you guys on the water. smile.gif

Cliffy.
