Coyote's Everywhere

Recommended Posts

I am from Dawson originally, and go back often from here in the cities. They don't seem to be a factor out near there. I am sure there are more near Lac Qui Parle lake. I saw one at Twin Bridges a while back and he/she was scared of nothing at all!

Better to have coyotes than fox, if you are concerned abot bird populations. Generally, where you have 'yotes, you don't have as many fox or other ground nest raiders like skunk, coons and the like.

But, clearly, to much of any of these is a bad thing. Except pheasants. Can't have to many of those.

I also live in the Appleton area and spend alot of time in the outdoors. What I am seeing and hearing is no different than any other recent year. With the unbelievable amount of hunting preasure this area recieves from hunters it is amazing that anything survives around here. There were even more predator hunters than normal last year and the hunter numbers seems to be growing.

And, I miss the days of the fox! In the 70s and 80s I put a lot of them on the stretcher and in a lot of respects I don't think there is a more enjoyable critter to hunt or trap than the red fox. Ya, I realize they may take some pheasants but for the amount of skunks and coons in this region it's a wonder pheasant eggs have a chance to hatch.

I was out bowhunting on Thursday morning in Cannon Falls. At about 8:00 am I start to see some nice deer along the Cannon River feeding and heading in my direction. Out about 70-80 yards the deer all of a sudden start trotting off. I thought that I was winded by the deer, at least I thought I was. I was thinking to myself, How could I have been smelled by those deer, I was down-wind, I had was my clothes in scent free wash detergent, I used a ton of scent killer, what could it be....then all of a sudden I see this coyote coming up wind up both the deer and myself, and his is cruising the shores of the river. So it wasn't me afterall! He gets to about 40-50 yards out, and I pull back on my bow and tried to get him, but to my dismay, I missed.

Man tht coyote ruined my morning hunt, The deer that I saw coming my way appeared to have a huge buck with him.

So I decided to go down Friday morning as well. This time no coyote, and I was able to glass a monster buck that is in the area, an 11 pointer that has one of its tines broken off. He was half-heartedly following some does and small basket-rack buck. I was able to stop him and got his attention by grunting, but he would not cross the river, he would rather chase some does he already had his sites on.

I plan on bringing a decoy down with me sunday morning..maybe I will put the antlers on and see if that fires him up to cross the river and get closer to me....I hope I don't see those coyotes anytime soon...

I live SW of Redwood Falls MN and they are absolutely everywhere. I heard groups every night when I was bowhunting and some friends of mine had two deer eaten that they were gonna track in the morning. It is really disheartening when you shoot a nice deer and the yotes end up gettin him. This winter should be fun chasing them around. Thinking about getting an electronic caller and seein what kind of damage i can do.

I live in NE Montana and we are infested with the Coyote. A guy lost a cow one day, and went to check the rest the next day. There were 10 of them eating on the cow when he came out. We are close to the North Dakota border and the Candian Border. We seldom see Fox now. We have a lot of Pheasants to show for it to. CAJ

I know the west central area of MN is getting infested as well. I have continually seen my area's numbers of deer go down per year. Last spring I would see an average of two to three per week, sometimes in the middle of the day. The deer population in my immediate area was once the highest in the area. It seemed as though all I did was waste gas this summer and fall scouting for deer in the area. I had to scrap my traditional great bowhunting spots and scout some new areas south to find any deer.

I seriously doubt this is a coincidence and something needs to be done to control this population. Farmers around the area as well have said they have seen unbelievable numbers of coyotes.

One of my hunting buddies owns a farm place of 150 acres at Pine City. He told me that last night, just after dark, he could hear three coyote packs howling back and forth. He shot six coyotes off his place in the last year and he's only up there a day or two a week. He never actively hunts them, just shoots them when they offer easy shots. They mostly have left the pheasants alone, but all of his farm cats have disappeared. If the snow piles up this winter, I may have to find out which of my sons has borrowed my varmint gun.

A friend of mine has been followed back to his truck from his bow stand by yotes. They didn't seem afraid of him at all. If he yells or shoots at them they just howl and growl. Obviously the SE corner is full of them. We always take a shot if we get a chance when deer hunting.

I hunt near Fergus and for the first time ever we have the yotes up there. I have been going there every weekend for 30 plus years and this is the first year for any sightings. When we get some snow I WILL be thinning that pack.

I will piggy back on Joe-stacks back here: I have a desire to hunt coyotes as well and the group of three of us have been searching for land to access for the last 2 years in the metro area or just south of metro. We are all in the Prior Lake Savage area, have electronic calls, and are will ing to talk with and meet any interested landowners.

You boys who are wanting places to hunt are going to have to go knocking on some doors. I can't believe many places are going to open up because you posted on an internet board.

I contact about 75 landowners per year. Nothing like a handshake and a polite conversation to open up land.
