grunt calls

Recommended Posts

I'm not an expert, but I do know that one advantage of a grunt is that you can stop a moving deer. You can also influence a deer that is moving in the opposite direction. I've grunted deer in before, but I think rattling is more effective for that. I keep the grunt just in case I need it in a pinch to stop one or get it closer. Primos makes nice calls.

I picked up a call called the "Extinguisher". It has a slide on it that adjusts the reed so you can go from a fawn, to a doe, to buck grunts. It came with a pretty good instructional CD. Nothing like a 3 for one call. So far I've lured in two bucks and a Doe, but I've only been offered one shot and I messed that one up myself. I'm by no means an expert caller but I like what I've seen from this call so far.

i will also put my vote in for the tru talker. grunted in lots of deer with them and shot my first buck with a bow using it. i even grunted a big 8 pointer that was running around chasing a doe for my old man, but the buck was to fast for him.

This past weekend I heard a buck off in the distance thrashing around and it sounded like he was headed my direction...but then he turned away and is heading away so I thought I better make a move...so I grunted with just my voice. The buck stopped on a dime and headed right towards me. We went back and forth grunting at eachother...I got him to within 8 yards but behind a tree and also by that time it was very dark. He stuck around a long time. He eventually came out into an opening and I saw his silhouette...big deer...but I could not make out his rack.

I have a regular grunt call as well...but I have a buddy who always just uses his voice to grunt and has good success. I will not be afraid to use my own voice to grunt any more. In fact it actually sounds more realistic than the grunt call I do own. But maybe the Tru Caller these other guys are talking about is a very good one.

Just thought I'd add my little story. It was a rush for me!

Last year was my second year of using a grunt call.

2nd day (Sunday) fo a 2 day season up North. Sitting in a permanent blind on private property. Called a nice buck in but it came it behind me.

First thing I heard was it stomping it's feet and trashing some willows with it's horns. Turned around to see it stareing straight at me. Didn't dare move. Waited for what seemed like 10 - 15 minutes. Tried to raise my rifle. Buck saw movmement and said goodbye.

It definately came to the call and next time I'll pay more attention.

Another vote for the Tru Talker. Very realistic sounding and I also use my voice to stop deer if the Tru Talker is not handy. Sometimes things happens that quick and I don't always like thinks hanging around my neck when bow hunting because the bow string can sometimes catch those things i.e. grunt calls, binoculars, glasses etc. not good. Something to keep in mind everyone! When using my voice I simply say "Hank" in a very low voice.....works for me. Good Luck!!

i have a true talker and a quaker hammerhead. i go with the hammerhead everytime. noting against tru talker but hammerhead has and adjustable horn looking thing that increases volume. deer can hear that call 300 yards away if you blow loud enough and have the barrel set to max volume. simply slide barrel off and ur super loud grunt goes to extremely quiet for close range deer. Love it. works great with primos can calls. Another great Call i couldnt live with out!!!!!!!!!!

My go to grunt is the Primos Hardwood grunter... I am the opposite side for the Tru Talker, really dislike the bulkiness of it. Also, I carry a small MAD snort wheeze tube. It seems to echo this sound much better then doing it strictly with your voice.

H.s. TrueTalker handsdown. I used to use a Rob Benson adjustable, but ever since the truetalker has come out I have been sold. I've used the other name brand calls as well, but they all sound like there coming from plastic. The True Talker is relatively inexpensive, as I usually buy one or two a year because I end up giving them away. They don't freeze up in the cold, and they are the most realistic calls you can find. Super adjustable, nothing to come apart,no bands to slide up and down. Just press in on the web and grunt. It's that easy.

Heres a question to all who use grunt calls, I have never used one before, what is a good brand to use, and are they hard to master the techniqe of using one, Thanks for any info

A lot of people will probably not agree with me, but I don't use the grunt to lure in a deer. I use it to turn deer around if they are not coming my way. No trick to it, I just use a short grunt.

Your best bet is to just be quiet and let the deer come to you.

Um, yes. But only if you wanna shoot a deer. grin.gif

I usually get 2 or 3 days in the field each year, so I have to make the most of 'em. I have grunted in handful of bucks on opening day as have other guys in our party, whether it's warm & sunny or deep freeze cold. They'll respond to grunts (sometimes just investigating) even if they're not rutting yet.

Shoot straight and be safe.
