Favorite and least Favorite Outdoor Show?

WB make the CUT

Recommended Posts

My favorite by far is RealTree Roadtrips. I actually bought the season one DVD. Its pretty cool seeing the behind the scenes and the rest of the comradery that goes along with a hunt. Its not a standard three kills in a half and hour show.

My worst would have to be BJ Outdoors that is on the MN FSN. I have hunted my whole life and killed many animals, but that show makes my stomach turn. I caught a portion a couple weeks ago where they were in Africa and had this camera work zoomed in on a warthog eating in the field. It looked like National Geographic or something. All of a sudden bang, a warthog is flopping around on the ground, then back to peaceful grazing, then bang another kill. It went on like this for a couple minutes. If anything on TV is going to give a anti's some fuel, this is it.

Eastman's is a great show.

On local TV I think Tony Dean is Top's with Linder's Angling Edge being a top notch fishing show.

I've just got the throw Ted Nugget in there. Not so much for the fact of viewing "pristine" hunts but for the reason of needing someone so anti, anti-hunter and his respect for the animals. Got to love "The Nudge".

I don't know about my favorite but one show I can't stand is Rugged Outdoors on the Men's Channel. That guy is an (Contact US Regarding This Word). He makes me want to throw something at the tv. He says all this talk about how hunting makes you rugged. Personally I think he gives hunters a bad name, making us all look like a bunch of hicks or something. Anybody who has seen it knows what I am talking about. Sorry, I just had to vent. grin.gif

I really like the Primos show, and the elk show on OLN by the Rock Mountain Elk Foundation is fabulous. Not really hunting or fishing, but Gold Fever and Prospecting America on the Outdoor Channel are quite entertaining. Nugent's show is good, but the canned hunt atmosphere is a bit off-putting at times. He does not try to hide the fact, so it's ok.

I hated Dime Store Fisherman when it was on.

Fishing with Shelly and Courtney has some nice "scenery" at times...

I think my fav would have to be Realtree Roadtrips or Jay Gregary's show. I can't think of my least favorite, but there are plenty of them that suck. I can't believe that some of those guys get sponsors enough to have a show confused.gif. This time of year, hunting shows is all a guy has; although I don't care for Turkey hunting.

My most favorite show is " We Live Outdoors" produced by the Minnesota boys from Gander Mountain. I like many of the other mentioned. But has anyone ever watched "Hunting With Hank", now thats the worst hunting show I have ever watched. Hank is a great dog, but come on Dez Young is so boring. I also like the Primos hunting shows. I have one of their DVDs.

I personally feel the show by the Drury's is a bad impression on hunters as a whole. Hunting is not about the competition between hunters, it's about getting outdoors. I also don't care for the shows which have a total of 10 minutes of commercials, 10 minutes of footage that promotes an outfitter or hunting lodge, and then the last 10 minutes are reading out of a bible. mad.gif

I actually fished with the BJ Outdoors crew one time. I was on a fly-in trip in Manitoba and they happened to be the only other group at this outpost camp with us. This was before I had even seen thier show. First off, these guys were super nice, but I remember getting the impression that it seemed like a low budget outfit. They didn't use microphones or fancy cameras. Some guys in thier crew used salted(dead) minnows when all you really needed was a tennis shoe with a hook on the end...well, that might be pushing it, but pretty much anything would catch fish. Then when I saw the show they had filmed it confirmed my opinion that it looked low budget. The wind was blowing and becase of the cheap equip, all you could hear is the wind in the camera. You would think there are some better shows out there.

Jon Gelespi is a goon, but his show is the only one I know of that tapes during the week and runs on the weekend. So when it is ice fishing season, he is ice fishing.

Other greats...

In-Fisherman

Angling Edge

Any MN Bass/Walleye Tourney coverage.

My absolute favorite outdoor show is 'Waterdog' on OLN. If you are into duck hunting & dogs, there isn't a better show in my opinion. Justin Tackett & his dog Yella are absolutely phenomenal in portraying the essence of duck hunting on TV!

A close second is Ducks Unlimited TV followed by 'We live Outdoors' (Gander Mt.). The Gander show was featuring bowhunting in southern MN tonight when the guy made a somewhat bad shot. They tracked the deer and found it bedded down still alive. The show stressed how important it was to back off and come back a couple hours later rather than jumping the deer. I just have to applaud this episode. They came back later and found the deer dead in the same spot. How many other shows would have skipped this important topic.

I love The Nuge's show. It is hilarious. His wife is a fox too blush.gif. I also like Ron Schara's show too. it always has some good stories that we can relate to here in Minnesota.

My least favorite has to be any show with Jimmy Houstan. He's dumb and has greasy hair. He also baits deer like theres no tomorrow.

I was just watching Waters & Woods or whatever his show is called on Saturday. Is it just me or does it seem like Gillespie must be having a beer between each shot? Maybe it's just how he talks, for which I then don't want to rip him, but the way he talks so loud & obnoxious, with slurred speech, you gotta wonder. He reminds me of Ed McMahon from the Tonight Show 20 years ago or however long it's been.

I like most of the bowhunting shows. I get the Men's Channel & they have a pile of them on there. I don't care so much for the shows where they drop these critters like a ton of bricks from one side of a canyon to the other with a huge rifle. I mean it's an impressive shot, but what chance does the animal have, they're so far away? I'm not saying I think it's unethical, it's just not my choice.

This is interesting, if you ask the S.O. she'll say I must watch them all! laugh.gif

Actually she's kind of right too...

I do like Primos TRUTH, Realtree adventures and Mossy Oak's hunting the Country real well. Also the Nug is a classic...THE SPIRIT OF THE WILD!!!! I like Eastman's too, but mostly because I'm going to CO. Elk hunting this year and that's good watchin for that... I don't mind Keith Warren either though.

There are a couple I don't like. I think that Peter Fiducia is too dorky for TV by far. I also don't much like that Wisc guy for all the same reasons you guys have mentioned for how loud and obnoxious he seems.I didn't like the Dream Season at all either. I don't like turning hunting into Reality TV or a game show! frown.gif

Like I said though, I'll pretty much watch whatever the Outdoor Channel throws on, as long as its not the stupid gold mining shows?!?!?!?!!!!

You guys are right on about Gillespie. His show consistently shows ice fishing which I love but he is so annoying. In case you've never noticed, Leinenkugel's is the main advertiser/sponsor for the show and I think Gillespie is given an all you can drink package from them.

I would have to say the best show is "We live outdoors" followed by WaterDog and DU TV.

The abosolute worst hunting show on tv (and I am shocked nobody has said it yet) is Samurai Sportsman. Am I the only one who was vitcomized watching it (only once I swear)?

Jeezz I must be doin somethin wrong. If I'm not out huntin or fishin the wife has me workin on some project so I very rarely get to see any outdoor shows.

I remember I did see one that I swore I'd never watch again. Some guy with a gruff voice, full beard and not many scruples, don't remember his name.

My personal favorite is Wisconson's Waters and Woods with John Gillespie. It is fun to watch them get into all kinds of different fish and big ones too. I also like how excited John gets when someone else has a fish on. A great Show.
