rundrave
Decided to pick up the the flame king refillable propane kit and one extra refillable canister. Used it for the first time and it was super easy. Never been a fan of the disposable 1lb'ers due to cost and just throwing them away. I know there were ways to refill those but it was not safe or approved. It think I paid $33 for the kit and $11 for an extra canister. Looking at fleet farm ad with 2 1lber disposables for $6.99 wont take long to recoup my cost. But just the convenience alone is worth something also. The flame king kit eliminated a lot of issues and made it super easy plus it is DOT approved. Much easier than filling up the disposable tanks and this kit actually gets them full as well. Any one else using this? How are your refillable tanks holding up?
Hawg
I've never used one but I have thought about getting one many times. I thought they were more than $31, that will pay for itself fast. I've read a lot of posts regarding refilling the green cans. I wonder how dangerous they really are if you use a scale.
delcecchi
Here's what happened when the guy down the street was refilling pounders in his garage....
roony
First rule, do it outside. If you can't follow simple directions then things happen. rundrave
Hawg
Del, that was a good post a couple weeks ago, not sure if it was yours but you were on it a lot as I think I remember. That must have been the whole 20#er to that don’t you think? Do you think they are that dangerous if you scale them and (of coarse) do them outside? As I remember you’ve done a lot of them (?) right? It would seem those greenies have to be super strong to be even allowed in stores. I’ve never heard of problems at retail, have you?

Bet he wasn’t using the same kit I shared above. per instructions it’s obvious you don’t refill in an enclosed area. roony
delcecchi
He was filling small containers from a larger cylinder in the garage. I think an electric heater was also involved. It was very exciting. I am sure that refilling various cylinders is ok if you are careful and know what you are doing. Outside is a great idea. I am sure he thought he knew what he was doing until the fire started. It was nice pickup in the other stall of the garage.... You do what you want to, just think about what if something goes wrong. If the door is up, is the garage an enclosed area? He didn't think so.

I haven't refilled any cylinders and after what I saw I would only do it outside a good distance from any structure or source of ignition. You connect a small one to a big one. If there is a leak, would you notice until something ignited? Me neither. But it was exciting. All those trucks and lights and whatever. Hawg
Probably why I never bought one, the common sense nerve says pass.

These tanks come with the allen wrench and a purge vent, that is the key. It works so well because it’s venting as it’s filling and its easy to tell when they are full. And you can also weigh them for good measure I guess to see how much is in them.

I think it is one of those deals that looks easy, until something goes wrong. Like washing parts in gas, or keeping the gas can near the water heater. smurfy
I used to refill those little tanks. I don't anymore, to me to dangerous and a PITA!!!! and for the amount of the I use i'll buy new ones each time. that extra money I spend on them and my safety is well worth it. with that being said I know nothing about that apparatus rundave posted, but looks to me like a much safer means. rundrave
Wanted follow up and report that after a few refills couldn’t be happier with this kit and I still haven’t burned my house down. the refill process has been super easy. And with them being vented easy to identify when they are full. I’m out on the ice now and fishing is slow but staying warm with it: leech~~ and Mike89

1968
Got the kit and an extra 3 bottles for this season. Also got some brass caps for good measure. Gotta keep the buddy heaters and the fryin saucer well fed! May only take one ice season to break even. rundrave

He was filling pounders from a 20 or a 30 in his garage. Something started to leak an apparently propane is heavier than air so it ran across the floor, until the electric heater they had going made a spark. I think they had the door up but I'm not sure. He got a new truck out of the deal.. Pretty sure it was one of those deals to refill the disposable pounders. But I don't know for sure. Did bring some excitement to the hood.
