The trend right now is for star players that are for sure being drafted by the NFL to sit out bowl games if it's not playoffs. The best chance the Gophers might have is to play a team like Alabama and hope most of the players take the night off.

Gophers vs. Alabama? Signs point to Minnesota bowl against the gold standard.

It looks like Minnesota remains pegged for the Outback Bowl on New Year’s Day bowl in Tampa, Fla.

ESPN’s Kyle Bonagura saw the Crimson Tide’s fall to 12th, looked ahead and tweeted: “The rankings this week set up a strong possibility that 10-2 Baylor could wind up in the (‘New Year’s Six’ bowls, likely the Cotton) ahead of 10-2 Alabama. Auburn (then goes to the Citrus and Alabama to the Outback Bowl.”

CBS Sports’ Jerry Palm also has Baylor in the “New Year’s Six” top tier of bowls, as does Stadium’s Brett McMurphy, who slot:

 Minnesota vs. Alabama.

How about that wild prospect? The Gophers might draw a dynastic Alabama program.

I’m still holding out hope that Wisconsin gets absolutely trounced by Ohio State (which is likely). And that allows us to get into the Citrus Bowl.

If Alabama goes to the Outback Bowl, you can count on the practice squad showing up to represent the team, as every draft prospect will sit that game out to “prepare” for the combine.

Sounds like an excuse to me. You play with the team you have, injuries, suspended players, quitters, we don't care.

Of course that's the way you see it. It's the only way the gophers have a chance against good competition instead of Rutgers, Maryland and South Dakota State.

? When we beat Alabama you can bet we're going to absolutely crow about it. No matter how many quitters you have on your team or who dreams up whatever excuses! ???

I love it when Alabama fans are so worried about getting beat by the Gophers that they start making up excuses for a LOSS to them! ????????

It could happen. It already did!  ?

Sunday is bowl selection day, and the 10-2 Gophers are projected to make the Outback Bowl in Tampa or Citrus Bowl in Orlando. Both include SEC opponents — perhaps Auburn or Alabama — on Jan. 1, which would mark just the second time the Gophers have reached a New Year’s Day bowl game since their last Rose Bowl trip, in 1962.

This season, all signs point to Florida based on the Big Ten’s rules for selections, including how this is the final year of a six-year agreement with various bowls, and many teams aren’t allowed to repeat appearances. Projections have the Gophers playing either No. 11 Auburn or No. 12 Alabama. The latter would be a rematch of the 2004 Music City Bowl in Nashville, where the Gophers defeated the Crimson Tide 20-16.

Alabama got lucky to play a weaker Michigan team and Minnesota will have to face the team better than Alabama, Auburn.

Poor Alabama doesn't get a shot to finally get a win against the Gophers and break the Minnesota Gophers unbeaten streak against Alabama in real games.

Weaker Michigan team. That's a good one.

I'm pretty sure not one Alabama player, coach or fan cares.
