ford ecoboost opinions

Recommended Posts

I'm in the market for a new to me pick-up. I know I will be going with a crew cab ford 09 or newer. I'm having a issue deciding if I should go with the ecoboost, the v-8 5.4 or the 11 or newer v-8 5.0. I'm curious as to people who have a ecoboost that do any sort of pulling, how does it compare to the v-8's. also what is gas mileage on the ecoboost. Thanks

Daily driving around town and back and forth to work on the highway, I average in the 16's for mileage on my 13' ecoboost crewcab.

When I towed my 18.5 crestliner sportfish to Vermilion last year I averaged in the 14's. I was still within 1-2 oil changes at that point.

Sitting around 13.8K miles right now. I love the truck/motor. It tows really nice.

schmoe, I've had both the 5.0 and the ecoboost and very little difference in mileage or power. I've had the FX4 in both models and had the 5.0 with the 3.73 rear end and presently have the ecoboost. I tow a 4,500 lb. boat around quite a bit and haven't noticed much difference between the two. The 5.0 is a very good motor and, so far, the ecoboost is as well. I would definitely stay away from the 5.4. I've had a number of those as well and the gas mileage towing with that 4 spd. transmission is terrible. I would take a drive in each and make your choice. With the 5.0 and ecoboost I was, and am getting 16-18 around town and 19-20 highway. Towing knock off a couple of mpg.

I looked at it this way when I bought my '13 and I got the Ecoboost:

Would there ever be a time when I would say, "I sure wish I would have gotten the 5.0."? Probably not.

Would there ever be a time when I would say, "I sure wish I would have gotten the Ecoboost."? Probably.

I made the same call on the 6.5' bed as well - don't think I would ever regret having more bed, but I know I would regret having less bed at some point.

I'm at about 84k on my 2011 Ecoboost, and I haven't put a dime in it other than tires and tranny flushing every 25k. Knock on wood.

As mentioned, stay away from the 5.4. Both the 5.0 and Ecoboost are in an entirely different league, empty or towing.

Mileage, overall, will probably be very close. You'll probably get better mileage empty with the Ecoboost, and the guys with the 5.0 are getting better (claimed) mileage than me when towing heavy. I get right around 17 or 18mpg towing a 16' Crestliner to Canada. I get about 9mpg towing my fish house.

As far as power, the Ecoboost has a much better torque curve, better peak torque, and better peak HP which is going to benefit you towing or empty. You are making peak torque from 2,000rpms to 4,500 rpms vs a spike at 4,500 rpms for the 5.0. The Ecoboost bests the 5.0 in every category from idle all the way up to peak RPMS. It is a total beast towing heavy. My old 5.4 would struggle to keep up with the flow of traffic with 2500 pounds...the Ecoboost does it easily with 3x's the weight.

I think the a legitimate question with the Ecoboost is going to be what happens long term. There aren't many out there with over 100k. It is obviously a somewhat new design. That said, I think Ford did their homework and got it right. Time will tell.

I am considering the same, so I asked the owner of the repair facility here in Chetek Wi. They are ford guys. He advised i get the 5 lt. as he believes long term that the boosted 3.5 lt will cost more to maintain?I understand that is just one persons opinion, but one that has more knowledge than I. I do wish ford would match other manufactures with a 5 yr. 100,000 mile power tran warranty. I talked with a guy that had just bought a new 150 with the 5 lt ,he had previously had a 150 with the 5.4 he said mileage was close ? I know from having a 5.4 in a f250 that the mileage isnt good. 10-12 towing and 14 or so empty on highway.

If you buy from one of the major Ford dealerships in the Twin Cities metro, you'll get a lifetime powertrain warranty. And 9 free oil changes.

Regardless of what motor you choose, it takes fuel to make power. Doesn't matter if its Ford, Chevy, Dodge, 5.3, 5.4, 5.7, 3.5, 6.2...

The Ecoboost very well might cost more long term. But there hasn't been a single credible report stating that.

I had heard about the lifetime tranny warranty at morries, as I was having problems with my tranny at the time. (93k miles) I have a 09 f150 5.4 and can say that I have got up to 21 MPG no load driving to the cabin, 110 mile trip. I average 18 MPG summer with the 5.4, but much less in the winter. I am in the market for a new truck, and was woundering the same about the ecoboost. I do a lot of towing and was thinking about getting the 6.2, but worried of bad milage, and no one seems to carry them in stock.

I'd like to know which Ford dealer. That warranty would get me to buy from a competitor no doubt.

Yeah I can't get that at our family dealership. Either hot air or maybe just a limited time at a few of the big places? Doubt it though.

Betting that this is one of those "you have to have all service done at this dealership" warranties, where they make enough off you in the life of the vehicle by overcharging you for doing next to nothing at the 7500, 15000, 30000, etc. maintenance intervals so that they don't mind eating the cost of an engine or two here or there on a few customers.

My wife's car came with "free oil changes for life" as long as you used them for all service. For the 15k service they wanted like 500 bucks just to inspect a few things and change a filter or two....LOL. We decided the free oil changes weren't worth it smile

Idk, but I guarantee I'm gonna test it. I fully plan to run this truck to 300k....hopefully on someone else's dime.

My guess is that any such warranty covers defects, not normal wearout items... although I'm sure youve read the fine print whereas I have not.

My truck is a little over a year old and I haven't had any problems with it. It outperforms any V8 I ever owned and matches my needs for the things I do. I used to own a diesel to get good power and good mileage and this truck does the same.

I'm not nieve to think my ecoboost can do the towing of a 1ton diesel, but my truck can tow any size camper I will buy, any boat, 4wheeler etc. yet still drives gets great mileage for the other 98% of my driving.

With a new long commute at work, I'm averaging 18.4 mpg for the last 2 weeks. I can't complain about that one bit in the middle of winter. That is a crewcab with 6.5' box, the max tow package tow mirrors and 3.73 gears. Not too shabby if you ask me.

As far as maintenance and warrenties, I owned a 6.0L diesel F350, so you'll have to convince me how #1 a turbo gas motor is somehow supposed to be a maintenance concern and #2 a 100,000 is gonna be much different than a 30K or 60K warranty. There's a great line about warranties in the movie Tommy Boy and I feel it usually applies quite well to cars and trucks. If you're glad you have a long term warranty, you're probably not glad your truck is always in the shop and having that warranty isn't gonna make you much happier.

I have a 2011 ecoboost 6.5 foot box crew cab. Now have 75,000 miles. Will do anything a v-8 will do only better. More power, much more than a chevy 5.3 that i traded for it. I pull a 18 foot fiberglass boat, most of the time gets around 14-15 mpg. Pulls that boat way better than my previous truck with 5.3 and way better on fuel. would buy again in a heartbeat.
