JeremyCampbell
Just wondering why Im getting these itty bitty curls almost in a scrunchy way.Im not talkin about the curls you get that are the width of the spool. These curls are very fine sized.I noticed its only on the 30 feet or so of line I use. Both reels are doing it.One is 2 lb test the other is 3 lb.Both are quality line. This is the second time Ive changed line for this reason this winter. Thanks
CAMAN
Spinning reel? Check the line roller on the bail and make sure it spins freely and the line isn't getting caught between it and the bail. Also make sure the line isn't getting wound up behind the spool and the line is laying smooth on itself.

I always stretch the part of my line I'm useing at beginning of the day it really helps.By pulling on the line it also shows a weak spot that might save you a $3.00 lure. centralmnguy
take your spool off reel and run it under hot tap water for a few minutes. It will loosen up the memory in the line & form fit it around the diam. of your spool.
Hawg
You sure it's just not line twist? If it's about the depth you fish it's probably from plain old line twist.
20lbSloughShark
The only time I've had that happen was when my line was wrapped around something like under the spool. An easy fix is to use braided line.
Jdjulik
I was getting this same problem using micro ice Trilene from Walmart right off the spool on multiple reels... Never had that problem before and I have used the micro ice with no problem before as well
ClownColor
Both lines used on same rod? Chipped or broken eyelet?
amateurfishing
think about a straight line reel and never deal with the issue again....no matter what the culprit is
JeremyCampbell
I'm just going to respool the two with something different.I'm wondering if reeling it in with ice in the line and leaving it in the rod bag in these freezing temps did all this.I usually leave it all in my truck 247.Sometimes the line gets under the spool and I have to undo it but I also have a habit of reeling in the line until the jig is touching the eye when I store it.Maybe the line is pulled to tight for storage in below freezing temps.Yes it was the micro ice product.I thought if I spent a little more I would have good line.I think the next product I will read more reviews before buying. BoxMN
I see it too, but I think it is from ice building up on line, or on eyelets, and then the lines pulling through it - basically doing what was mentioned a stuck roller/line getting caught in roller can do.I see it more when fishing outside on cold days when I am breaking ice off more, hence my theory. Also more on the real thin mono line like 2#. Hard to eliminate that, if it is a potential cause.
Genofish
It could be a few things as the others have mentioned. I have been using the "ice lines" made by a few manufactures and have had good results.I also use a small swival on my panfish set ups to eliminate line twist
Naturboy
I've experienced the same thing. When ice freezes to your eyelet on the rod then you reel your line up through the ice it puts that curl in the line. Makes it almost impossible to feel lite bites, that's my excuse and I'm stickin with it.
JeremyCampbell
Lol Nature boy,I'm going to use that reason too.
Tom Sawyer
JC do you use a small swivel above your lure? If not I'd say it's simply line twist. Unless you make a habit of reeling your line thru iced up guides. I would think after one crank of the reel you'd clear your guide though....? If not your asking for more problems than just line curls.
JeremyCampbell
Next time I go out fishing I will see what I'm actually doing then figure out what changes to make from there.Havnt used a swivel for pan fish before.I may try that. younggun
In my experience, this is due to some point of friction be it ice or otherwise. Similar to running a ribbon over a scissor. I'd carefully check your setup.
shovel1978head
In line reels work EXCELLENT!!! I am planning on switching to them on all my crappie and gill rods. They spool the line off of the reel the same way it comes off the spool from the manufacturer. I only have one but there is no comparison to it AT ALL. I can turn the drag down with a flick of the thumb and reel it backwards and drop my jig precisely where I want it in way less time than using my open face and trying to guess where my jig will stop when all the twists come out of the line. I also use power pro line (red if I can find it) it has ABSOLUTELY ZERO STRETCH. You feel and see every bite! BUT..... that's just my opinion!! If so, that's probably your problem.
Evobassfish
Its microscopic sediment in the water/ice causing the line fray. You will notice it more using mono, thats why I stick with fluorocarbon and co-polymer line. They are more abrasion resistant than mono.
