It's that time of year again - mice protection

dryer sheets do not work, I've found a few that were half eaten. The only things that really work have to be very strong smelling. Mothballs are great, you just have to deal with the smell. Something I've found is peppermint oil. It gives off an extremely strong smell, and seems to keep everything away.

The biggest thing you can do to prevent mice from entering your boat is to make sure your boat is empty. That means no leftover food, no plastics, no crumbs on the carpet and no bait left over stuck in the corners. Before I put my boat away I make sure is completely empty of tackle, the live well is dry and I vacuum the carpet.

Peppermint oil. I've used this for years in my campers and boats and have had no mice problems. A few drop on cotton balls and distributed around the boat and camper does the job. I own a retail store and we stock peppermint oil. We always order a few extra cases in the fall. The cabin owners buy this stuff by the multiple bottles.

That will help. On the other hand, a few years ago mice nested in my snowblower in the garden shed (no food ever in there) and ate the spark plug wire... well, the insulation not the wire.

I used to have 3 sheds and stored a lot of boats. People used Cab Fresh, dryer sheets, peppermint oil or moth balls. The only times people had mice was if their had food or anything resembling food left in the boat!

That includes old subway bags to pick up after your dog, worm bedding, gulp type baits and even D-Con. The D-Con may kill the mice, but if you put it in the boat it will actually attract them. It's best to put the poison baits by the wheels and jack outside the boat.
