Power Pro or Fireline?

8-Ball

Question

Hi All- picked up a few new trolling combos -primarily for crankbaits and maybe an occasional snell w live bait. Anyway- should I put fireline or power pro on them? I have fireline on one jigging set up. Its ok, but difficult to tie stuff on to it and it isnt real smooth when casting. Thoughts? Thx, 8-Ball. These combos are for eyes/pike/bass, by the way.

FWIW, the Power Pro loops around the tip of my rod more than Fireline or Suffix. Like when you go to take weeds off, and rod tip pointed straight up... it loops around and is "stickier". Makes me swear all the time. Other than that I like it, but for that reason I will not buy it again. Hard to decsribe what it is like, but when you see it you will notice it, and swear wink

IMO, PP will cast better because it's round. Fireline is flat and has a tendency to dig into itself, especially after fishing a good fish.

I've not had problems with PP like above, but I've only used it on one combo and that's 30lb on a casting rod, so it might not be an apples-to-apples comparison.

I asked a similar question in May. Dietz had a good explanation to why PP is better and one thing was that it was round. I switched my three rods I previously used fireline on and no problems at all. Also, tying knots seemed like they wouldn't "slip" as much. I use a palomar and only use the rods rigging with a flouro snell.

I have been using strictly fire line for a long time. When I started using it you could get a spool of it for $13 instead $21 shocked that's a long time. I still really like it, but am curious to see what everyones thoughts are. I will say casting long distance is not an issue for me, there is coating on it that lets is slide right through the guides.

Thx for all the opinions.. Like I said, I only have fireline on one reel and am not terribly overjoyed with it. It is tougher for me to tie a knot w/it than any other line that I have used. Yes, I use "cheater" glasses when tying knots now as I turned 50 this year. I dont know anything about suffix... is it more round like power pro and lighter or is it more dense like fireline?

Switched everything I had Fireline and PP on to Suffix 832. Line is alot more supple and doesnt wrap around the end eyelet on my jigging rod like the power pro used to. Works great on my bottom bouncer rigs as well. You also get a little added benefit of an extra foot or so of depth when used as a leader on my lead core rods vs. mono.

im not a pro by any means but have only ever used suffix 832 braid and love it......get decent distance with both spinning & baitcaster reels, works for top water baits, spinners, weeds when bassin, bottom bouncers, cranks, basically anything cept pan fishing. never used anything else.

Powerpro all the way. Smoother casting than fireline. Also, when the temps get cold the powerpro freezes up much less than fireline.

I have used all three on my walleye rods, both spinning and bait casting, and liked all of them. Probably have had my best luck using Power Pro though. Tried the new Power Pro Super 8 Slick this year and I am not real impressed with it though. After some use it gets "fuzzy" much faster then the regular Power Pro.

The 832 is also a good choice.

isn't there a difference between braided fireline and fused? I thought maybe one was round and that helped with the digging in for baitcasters?

when you live close to FFO, it's hard not to buy a couple hundred yard spool of fireline for $4, lasts me a couple years then respool for another $4. I am looking to try 832 ice line for "out of the shack"

ice fishing this year, as I have never cared for how fireline ices up.

Inside fishing is still hard to beat price from FFO.
