Wow. This could have been avoided with a little talk around a table beforehand. I feel for Jake A, though. Working and learning to get some skipper time, taking and passing tests for boat licensing, and Edgar takes the boat out instead. Too bad Jake had to blow up like that and that the NWern is losing him, because if Edgar is going to man the helm, who's the new deckboss? I hope to see Jake on the new boat (Kiska Sea?) as he may have reached the point where he has done all he can do under Sig's micro-management style as a captain. Especially with Edgar being the heir apparent to the wheel house.

I believe Edgar is part owner of the northwestern, I would say that gives him a seat in the wheelhouse before Jake.

you are correct him and Sig own the boat, i like Jake the kid has come along way but he really thinks he can run a boat after what 5 years on a boat? Will be interesting to see how everything plays out with him.

jake is way to much of a loose cannon, but who knows maybe the added responsibility of running a boat will humble him a bit, also there is another brother on the NW that works on deck and i think he owns a stake also, they just never talk about him cause he dosent like the attention.

I get that it is the Hanson's boat, and that Edgar would logically be next in line. But Jake was brought in green, has worked hard and also wanted to learn and do the extra work that the rest of the deckhand's don't need/want to do. It sounded like Jake did a lot of the cleaning/prep during offloads while the rest of the deckhands/crew would go partying, let alone what we have seen directly from the show. Learning hydros, keeping books, setting a string, getting himself licensed for different sized boats, etc. I think that extra work was wasted in Edgar's eyes when he said "You were hired as a deckhand; no more, no less".

I know that you don't just "get" a boat, you have to earn it; but how hard can it be when an a$$clown like Elliot can do it? Josh Harris feels like he can do it but he is legitimately riding his deceased Dad's coat-tails to do it. Without Phil, I don't see Josh ever getting as far as he has, let alone Jake H. Jake A didn't have the family of crabbers, except for the Hanson's who brought him in. He might be young, but you can't say that he hasn't had his eye on the prize and done the extra work to get it. I feel like his blow-up was due to the offer from the Kiska Sea and that Edgar was in the wheelhouse instead of Sig, who he might have been able to talk to, and then run through the reality TV show "add-drama-fier" filtering process. We all know that Jake A and Edgar have butted heads in the past when Jake wanted to step it up, and Jake couldn't talk about his offer to him.

Sig had a hard enough time finally handing the boat over to Edgar just to top of the blue crab season! If anyone thinks for a second he'd ever let Jake take over that boat, they need to get their head examined! Over the years, Jake is doing all the right things to eventually become a captain, but in the end he's too emotional to be a captain right now. If/when Jake ever does become a captain, it would be better for him anyway to do it on a different boat with different workers.

If I remember right, Jake is the nephew of the other deckhand (brain lapse) not Matt, and not a Hansen, the other guy. That was his link into the boat, I think it was the year his sister died and he got the call on board, it was that guy who told Jake because he was his uncle.

To me, this whole Jake and a boat thing seemed to be a little added drama, because like you guys said, he wouldn't be in line to take the helm.

I still like the show, but things seem to be set up way in advance now "lets go look at the storage containers of Phil's" Ok....oh no, its all been stolen. The phony bonds of partnering and then turn on each other. The Time Bandit and the false pass have his kid take the wheel and do it, in the dark...

but hey, I still watch it

I thought they dramatized the False Pass training too and I'm sure Scotty's been around enough to know the hazards so he didn't need the lectures - they figured we did.

I also agree on the storage locker theft. They probably knew about it already but having Josh and his Jonathan going together made better film.

Doesn't bother me that they try to make some things a little more dramatic - I don't think they overdo it nearly as bad as some of the other dump I've seen called "Reality".

I love the show but it seems like they're "reaching" on some of these things. Almost feels like the beginning of the end. Makes sense that in the 9th season they can't use the fishing material for the bulk of the show, but need the characters to keep it going

The whole Jake hazing seemed pretty staged to me, but you probably can't stage missing throws, I guess. He'll do fine.

I enjoy this show, but geesh, you guys are spot on about Elliot. He is just weird. Everything about the guy is just annoying, and I don't know if it's just me, but I can barely understand a word he says. I'm typically pretty good at interpreting a tough to follow accent, but listening to him is like listening to someone slowly releasing air from a big balloon in short rapid bursts.

Jake A seems to be a pretty good kid, but has pretty substantial immaturity issues. Personally, if I owned a 2 million $$ crab boat, I don't think I'd be comfortable letting him take it out to sea as Captain. I'm not sure he's even got the personality to be a good deck boss.

He's a good captain, doesn't dink around with the emotional stuff, and let's face it, he drops his pots on the crab, and in the long run that's all that really matters. I'd wager he's got the stuff to run a much larger boat.

I wouldn't stay with Elliot as a captain for one day. It really is a great question regarding the boat loan. I can see giving a reputable/successful young Cappy a shot by funding his boat, but Elliot? Do you have ANY good professional references? How's the family life? Any history of success catching crab? Any decent personal references? The only reason he's still crab fishing is for TV ratings. From a TV production standpoint he's clearly the guy everyone loves to hate. What a D-bag.

I was talking to some female friends a few days ago who were laughing about how their husbands were now addicts of Deadliest Catch. They said it's the modern day prime-time Soap Opera for men! Ya know, I couldn't really argue that...

You are right about him being a good captain, unless you get an infection and need antibiotics. Or unless he can't find crab and teams up with another captain that's on some crab, and immediately stabs him in the back when he asks for info. And then does it again to another captain.

she did that cause he has duel residency in the US and mexico and she was worried he would run with the kids, which i think is B S judges must be bored out there, that wouldnt fly around here, and i also dont care what anyone thinks of the guy no father ever deserves to have his kids taken away from him unless its a neglect or abuse situation, and remember there is alot of behind the scenes stuff we never hear about cause the producers ane building drama for tv, with that being said i hope he excels as a captain cause it was his dream to do so, would i fish with him no probably now, any of the other boats id hop on in a heart beat, i have watched the show from day one sure there is some added drama but that makes good tv but this show is about as real as it gets.

The hand looked bad but when they showed the x-ray the first time I thought it didn't seem too bad. Then they showed the x-ray a 2nd time and I just about jumped out of my seat when I saw his forearm/wrist!
