BLACKJACK
How long before one of the manufacturers comes up with a 360 side imaging depth finder for ice fishing?? Its the newest add on for Hummingbird, it deploys by a post/talon, I could see where it would be handy when scouting for fish, drill a hole, stick it down, look for fish, could be a handy tool. Are any of the manufacturers looking into it for ice fishing?
magnum mike
Bottom Line's Fishing Buddy has had that tech for many years. It's a great tool for finding suspended crappies.
TruthWalleyes
Bottom Line's Fishing Buddy has had that tech for many years. It's a great tool for finding suspended crappies. Uh...NO. That would be awesome wouldn't it BlackJack. Before the 360 came out i was really hoping it would be nice and compact...But that thing is HUGE. I'd hope HBird is working on that, but i kind of doubt it. I don't see much value in the 360 for open water...especially with SI on the boat already, but i'd love to have 360 for ice fishing. I suppose you could rig it to your fourwheeler or something, but for that kind of cash...I'll wait for an "Ice fishing" model. Best thing you can do for now is save your screenshots of side imaging from open water to view in the winter time and use the vex to mark fish. Helps when you want to drill in very specific spots. CaptainMusky
The fishing buddy certainly does what Blackjack was asking. I fished with a guy who used one years ago on LOW and it was pretty helpful. Fishing was slow, but he kept seeing fish go through 75 feet to one direction, moved the house and had much better luck.I wouldnt call in "imaging", but it will certainly detect fish off to the side.We were in an area void of significant structure so I think it would perform better in these type of conditions.I will admit, I laughed my butt off when I saw it, but at the end of the day it was a benefit having it for sure. TruthWalleyes
I'd LOVE to know how you knew which direction they were going with a stationary transducer.
CaptainMusky
How would you know what direction they are going with a moving transducer? The fishing buddy points in a direction, and you can turn it where you want and it will tell you how far away fish are. Never said I knew which way they were going, but they certainly werent going beneath us.There were no or few fish UNDER us, but fish consistently came through off to the side. Simple as that.Have you ever swung your transducer like a pendulum when its down the hole? It will help you see if the return you are picking up is beneath you or off to the side. TruthWalleyes
Nice, i figured you were just angling the transducer to shoot one side or the other. I really should have hooked up my quadra beam this year on the ice.
magnum mike
Uh... YEA! I have one.The Fishing Buddy has a dual transducer. One is straight down. The other is called Side Finder and is side looking sonar. Both readings are shown on the screen at the same time. You extend the transduer tube, put the unit down the hole and slowly rotate the unit while watching the screen. It will tell you the distance to the target in feet and you are pointing right at it. It runs on 3 C cell batteries and takes up very little space. I never go crappie fishing without it. I got mine well over 10 years ago and I believe they still make them. They are around $150. bobbymalone
I'd LOVE to know how you knew which direction they were going with a stationary transducer. We were fishing in Canada a couple summers ago and had three boats with our crew. We weren't having much luck at the honey hole, so one of our guys starts backtroll putting along looking around the area. He's about 50 feet away from my dad and I and says he's marking fish. My dad asks if they are swimming our direction. The guy looks at the graph, looks at how the transducer is mounted, looks back at the graph, and then says they are coming our way because of the direction the fish symbols are pointing on the graph. Oh man, we got a good laugh out of that. Never did tell the guy. He just kept asking why we thought not catching fish was soooo darn funny. DTro
The 360 is being used already on the ice. I recently seen a picture of a unit mounted on the front of an ATV and then placed in a hole. Its quite a ways off I'm sure, but people ARE using it.

McGurk
Well, that doesn't look cumbersome at all!
Lusid
Seems like a wise usage of time while out on the ice.
BartmanMN
How fun would that be. I can just imagine, you're on the ice with your LX-9 thinking you're Hot shi!, then this guy rolls up on you.
slurpie
I was at the hummingbird booth at the ice show when a guy asked this question. The guy in the booth said I will be awhile till the price can drop and make something more suited for ice fishing. But as stated if there gets to be a big need they will push it faster.
