Who has four water heaters in their house? The non-dangerous pics are great, but can you imagine buying a place like some of those and finding out later on what a mess it really is?
I'm sure it's a small 4 unit, unsafe apartment building! eek

I have watched the wife watch HGTV and they have a program that involves a homeowner trying to sell a house, then 'staging' the house by hanging sheets up for new curtains and such. Time and again people supposedly make offers on houses with nothing more than a walk through and don't even look at the mechanicals. Wouldn't surprise me a bit if you could sell nearly any of these places without too much of a hassle unless a home inspection was required.

The HGTV shows I know about are mostly bogus. I presume the rest are too. House hunters shows where the people already own one of the houses they "choose" from etc.

My aunt and uncle have four (though they are electric), one for main heating and the other three for storage. They are hooked up to off-peak power so they save quite a bit of money, and when they get a group of ten or more during a holiday or whatever they have yet to run out of hot water even with showers, dishes, etc.

I dont have to imagine, I know. And, an inspection can turn up a lot of things, but certainly not everything, trust me.

I picked up a project house a while back. After removing the drywall in a couple places, my carpenter buddy and I are looking at this wall... we look at the wall, look at the floor, look at the wall, look at the floor, look at each other, look at the door, look at each other...he says... "we shouldn't be in here". At some point in time, someone decided to just "remove" two load bearing walls to "open it up a little". Two 14 foot sections of wall we're simply cut out. No headers, no nothing, we were just looking at the bottoms of the studs from the 2nd story (balloon framed house).

We promptly built a temp wall and put it into place while we built some supports and got big beefy headers in there.

Our daughter bought a home not to long ago in the St. Paul area. She sent us the inspection report. I thought,OH MY GOD, she bought a dump!!! Load up the tools, son a good carpenter and took off for St. Paul. We live in nw Iowa. Floor was suppose to be so out of level, needed a support wall in the basement. NOT! Bath room vent were pvc, on to the attic. Wrong again. 3" cast iron thru the roof with a good job of sealing. Inspection report even showed a pvc pipe in the attic. Not sure what planet that guy was from. Turned out, great little house. I felt much better after seeing house in person. jps

The City of Saint Paul has some pretty tough standards in place to deal with the abandoned foreclosures. Might be that the inspector was being ultra conservative because of that. I would rather have that sort of a report that would help determine whether to buy or not.
