doe tag?

If that is the case, then I have two doe permits - I had one for rifle season (specifically stated the area it was valid) and I have one that specifically states for MZ and the area it is valid in.

I was told by the DNR that you can apply for a doe permit under your firearms license and you can also apply for one under your muzzleloader license, but it is only valid for the season specified.

This is what is says in the handbook

Successful applicants will receive a postcard in the mail authorizing them to take an either-sex deer using their regular license. The authorization will be valid for either the firearm or muzzleloader season; however, you must still have a valid license for that season.

I'm 99.9% sure that permit is still good for the MZ season if it wasn't filled during the firearms season and you buy a MZ lic

If you get drawn for a doe tag in a lottery area can you use it for the gun season or the muzzleloader season or can it be used for both. The regulation doesn't address this that i can find.

Tag is good for any season. May only be used once. You may only tag 1 deer in a lottery zone.

I talked to the DNR last year about this. 100% sure my statement above is correct.

Ok if you dont use it for firearm season can you use it for the muzzerloading season?

You can not use your firearms doe permit for the muzzleloading season. I am 100% certain on this. In order to have a doe permit that is valid for muzzleloading you would of had to apply for a doe permit specifically for muzzleloading. I am 100% certain on this. For instance when you bought your firearms licence and applied for a doe permit you also would of had to buy your muzzleloading licence and apply for a seperate doe permit. You could then recieve two seperate doe permits but you may only harvest one deer in a lottery zone. Simple phone call to the Mn DNR will verify this. The number is 888 646 6367.

Vexi if you were hoping for a solid answer I'm sorry. You have guys 90 percent sure one way and 100 percent sure the other way! wink I would call the DNR and ask. My guess would be that if you have the permit and have not used it, then you can MZ hunt with it as long as you have the license. Sorry can't give you a percentage on that though. smile

I e-mailed the DNR this exact question and you can use it for either season as long as you have a license for both seasons. So if you did not fill the doe tag for firearms you can buy a MZ lic and use it for that!

Froggy

I e-mailed DNR about that also because I wanted to know if I had to apply for the antlerless tag for both firearm and ML season. I got the same response you did: the tag is valid for both seasons ans long as it's only used once. This response came from Kevin Kyle at the DNR St. Paul; he's the one who has always responded to e-mail questions I have sent in the past. All this assumes you hunt both seasons in the same lottery area, which is what my question was about. If you hunt different lottery areas, then I have no idea.

Vexi, I would suggest you contact the DNR yourself and get the ruling from them rather than take anyone's word on here as gospel, including mine!

Yeah I have had similiar mixed information given to me and in the end the co was correct, the jokers that answer the "information line" phone or reply to emails don't know $#@&! I had two emails from separate dnr reps saying I could ride my wheeler beyond a sign on a trail the co said no and told me where to look up law and he was right, I coulda got ticket maybe lost my wheeler?

Sad can't trust information given from a information line...lol

The thing that I don't understand is why did I have to apply for a doe permit for muzzleloading. I recieved a doe permit for both my firearms license and a separate one for my muzzleloading license. Sounds like the DNR will have to do a better job of clarifying next year.

The answer is you didn’t have to. Now if you tagged a deer (buck or doe) in a lottery area during the firearms season that MZ lic and antlerless permit are worthless unless you are party hunting and had someone that would tag a deer for you if you got one

Probably because it's not a given that people buy both tags; many buy one or the other and in order to get the antlerless tag you'd have to apply for it either way.

The ELS isn't so sophisticated that it has real time updates on our personal license choices except in the few cases where it might block the sale of one license due to ineligibility from purchasing another. I don't recall the exact situation I encountered that but I remember being denied a license or application for a hunt or something like that.

If there isn't a conflicting reason the system will let you buy or apply for all the licenses you want. It's up to us to decide if we're buying and using the correct licenses. You have two tags - it looks like one is useless. Congrats on your luck for the draws though! It looks like you split your hand and won on both. smile

just another reason I will be starting my new seminar:

"Minnesota Outdoor Law Interpretation"

I'm thinking of holding it at a casino Hotel by Mille Lacs during ice fishing. Start around 1030am and go til 2pm so you can get the prime time fishing in. By the end of the seminar you'll be so confused you won't even want to step foot on the ice. We can have guest speakers from the DNR, one County Prosecutor, one Defense Attorney, and a panel of FM'ers give their interpretation. Once the speakers are done a CO will walk out from behind a curtain and give fake citations to all of the speakers who incorrectly interpreted the law from the CO's opinion of the interpretation.

Probably could start an Outdoor Channel reality show on this...hmmmm.
