Well since you can have two rods in Minnesota I set up one tip up and the other is a rod in my hand, or the best that would fit you would be a HT Ice Rigger, which is a tip up and a rod together. but ya i still see a lot of tip ups out there, they are still a good strategy to catching BIG fish.

Any legal advantage I can get ice fishing I will take. I always use a tip up even if I am fishing for crappies. I scout holes with my camera and have jinglle bells on the tippy so I hear when my flag goes up. Their is a lot of skill to using tip ups the right way.

I love using tipups, I get a rush when I see that flag go up.l have never used them for anything other than northerns, I had a huge northern on one but he bent the hook straight out right at the hole and I lost him.

I like useing tip-ups as well Looking at a few options for this up coming season for my toothy critter rigs. Looking at useing the clear Invisaswivls on some of my floro rigs and on a few others the nickle titanium wire leaders. Any one here use this brand Knot 2 Kinky and whats your thought over all good or bad?

On Lake Champlain, we can use 15 tip-ups at a time. Things can get pretty crazy fast! Inland lakes allow 8. The majority of my time is spent jigging but now and then it is nice to relax and let the fish come to me. All of my biggest perch (2+ pounds) have all come on tip ups.

I agree, I use one just so I can get as many lines in the water as I can. If I take my son out that is four lines total we get so I put out my tip-up and we use 2 rods(I only have one tip-up currently) If my father comes along we then can have 6 lines so we run 2 tip-ups and 3 rods (my father only has one tip-up as well). I am planning on getting a second tip-up this year if funds allow.

I use a tipup pretty regularly when fishing walleyes. I can hole hop around the tipup and dont have to worry about missing the strikes you wouldnt see with bobbers or deadsticks.

You can also use tipups on shallow structure while you work the edges with a rod that way you are not spooking the shallow fish.

I can recall occasions where fish have been far more willing to hit a tipup over other rods.

I usually do at least a few trips a year where we use tip-ups .... biggest walleye I caught through the ice last year came on a tip-up. But for the majority of my ice fishing I don't use tip-ups, I like to be more mobile and move around a lot more.

I always have one with me but I usually only use it when cramped house conditions limit me to one hole. Sometimes I'll put one out if I'm sitting on the ice in a lawn chair.

I've never had a flag up. Been ice fishing since 2006. Maybe this year is my year... doubt it wink

I use tipups all the time. Well not for crappies, but eyes and norts. As mentioned above I have caught monster perch (using shiner minner) on Mille Lacs on the mud. I use the Frabill round ones and they are OK - they are getting beat up over the years.

Growing up, I never used them. I have started incorporating their use in the last few years now and have become a big fan. Last year specifically, I can point to a lake trout and quite a few eyes that I would not have caught.

I love using them to test varying depths/locations 15-50 yards from where I am set up. Obviously, I don't use them when I'm "trolling". Once I find the fish though, LOVE them.

Interesting replies, not what I expected to be honest. Hand reeling a big pike on tipups might be my favorite thing to do ice fishing!

I use big circle hooks so CnR isn't an issue really.

I'm probably going to cut the ice fishing down at least in half this year, more into the SE Trout thing... but I am certainly looking forward to playing big pike on tipups.

I don't use tipups anymore. Frozen line getting caught on the ice chips, slow reeling, tangles easily, etc, etc. I switched to Clam Arctic Warrior Tip Downs last season. They are a blast and you get to use your own reel. I attached the tip down to a board and added a Frabill Arctic Siren alarm so that the flag going up sets the alarm off and the lights. Caught many walleyes with that rig last winter.
