Stopped into the local today. Thought I was all set with the Ruination and the ODell brewery IPA... when the clerk asked if I had tried Hopslam.

I anticipate the yearly release so as to score my case before it's gone.

Definitely hoppy but to me it seems maybe not so in your face as last years. Dunno for sure though...a year is a long time to try to remember the profile.

New Glarus in WI

Not so much into sours and such but I do like some of New Glarus offerings. Picked up a case of ABT Belgian quad style some years back, 09 or 10, don't remember for sure. It was brewed only one time and I have a few bottles left in cellar.

Perhaps a little past it's prime now some three or four years later but still good and better than when fresh. It has really mellowed over the years.

Wish they'd do that one again. I'd buy more to age.

Anyone know where I can find Great Divide Nomad and Hoss south of the river?

I've had on opportunity to try one of each but can't seem to find them stocked anywhere. All I keep seeing is Titan, Hibernation, and Denver Pale.

Nevermind. Found them at Blue Max. I should have looked there first.

I've grown fond on Tallgrass Brewing Company and especially their

Halcyon Unfiltered Wheat

But they have some very tasty options.

They surprised me with some of their brews. I had their IPA a while back and thought it was decent, but just decent.

They had a sale at the local... I am pretty happy with their Oasis, and their oatmeal stout is pretty good too.

Anyone have the Sierra Nevada Bigfoot 2013 yet?

I got to pour Tallgrass beers at the Two Harbors brew fest last weekend at Black Bear Casino. I think we were the most popular booth. The Velvet Rooster went very fast and I guess the Buffalo Sweat Oatmeal Stout was the talk of the show. The new 8-bit was a favorite too.

That was a lot of fun. Most of the people were there for the Dropkick Murphys after the beer fest so it wasnt all snobby which was good for me because I dont know much about beer other than what I like and dont, ie someone asked what hops are in this beer I would just reply "All of them".

Got to try Surly Pentagram after the show, its a sour, a real intersting taste there. Other than that I really liked Odell's Red beer. And there was a beer called Stoned Surf which I thought was good but real close to Surly Furious. That was the 2nd beerfest I've been to and they are great for trying different beers go to one if you ever get a chance. You'll spend a lot less time in the liquor store staring at different beers trying to decide which one to get.

Yeah. But pouring for them I felt kinda bad not knowing much about them so I'd just crack jokes. Everyone assumes you are a brewer for Tallgrass. but most people that asked about stuff are really just trying to make it sound like they know what they are talking about. My buddy who was pouring Buffalo Sweat had the best reply when asked about the hops: "You know it really isnt about the hops as much as it is about squeeging all that sweat off the buffalo" and then the chick asks if they have real buffalos down in Kansas and he says "yeah thats all we ride around on"... Like I said I was glad it was that kind of atmosphere and not the real snobby beer guys.

I may grab a bottle of that pentagram this week, just saw my local had a stash in the back. Really a cool bottle of beer, wax top with a maker's mark on it.

I honestly haven't had a bad beer from Odells...Mountain Standard and the IPA are excellent, but their myrcenary is my favorite by far, and is up there with Ruination IPA as a standard in the fridge.

Snatch it up. I dont think they brew that stuff too often. Its not listed on thier HSOforum at all. I was just lucky enough to be standing with the Surly guys when they passed it around at the concert.

I agree I havent had a bad one from Odell eiether.

I had a Deshuttes at The Nomad the last few times I've been there and it reminds me of a cream soda. Really smooth, kind of citrusy. Asked the people at the booth about it and they had no idea. I dont remember what it was called but it is good.

Was is Chainbreaker White IPA? I tried that off of Slab's recommendation and it went straight to the top of the list of my favorites. It's a perfect balance of the sweet almost citrus flavor of a white beer with a little bitter bite of an IPA.

Great, now I have to stop at MGM on the way home.

I know it would pair well with some kind of food but not quite sure what. I didnt get enough to really put a finger on it. Plus I was a little schnookered at that point of the night. I'm anxious to hear your take on it, I thought it was an "interesting" taste. Not like it was a bad "interesting", just havent tasted a beer like that before. Its and odd taste for a beer I guess, but with all these craft beers nowadays I guess nothing is off the table. Almost getting to be like wines.

Figured it out last night. Deshuttes Red Chair Nitro. Awesome beer.

Del, I have heard mixed reviews of this years snowstorm...

The style did not suite my taste well, but I have some friends that really liked it so it must have been well done for the style. smile

Side note... I saw a beer yesterday that called itself a "Session IPA"

I laughed out loud at that one. Seems to be a bit of an oxymoron.

    • Sorry to hear that Duff. Will give my GSP's an extra scratch behind the ear for you guys today
    • Aw, man, sorry to hear that.  Shed some tears and remember her well.  They all take a piece of our hearts with them; some more than others.
    • yes sorry for your loss..  our dogs are always special...
    • Truly sorry to hear that duffman! I know that feeling.  Keep the good memories
    • Chamois passed away this weekend a couple days short of her 13th bday. What a great dog to hang out with here at home and on distant adventures. Gonna miss ya big time my little big girl.
    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
